Job Description Basic Function: Candidates for this position must possess the combination of skills and flexibility necessary to counsel students with disabilities and provide assessment for learning disabilities using the criteria outlined in the California Community College LD Eligibility Model. (If applicant is not already certified in the LD Eligibility Model, must commit to becoming certified within one year of hire date.) Under general direction of the Vice President, Student Services, the DSPS Counselor/Learning Disabilities Specialist will assist the Dean, Student Services in the implementation of Disabled Student Programs and Services.
Education: Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling; OR master's degree in special education and 24 or more semester units of upper division or graduate level course work in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, or social work; OR master's degree in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, career development, or social welfare and either 12 or more semester units of upper division or graduate level coursework specifically in counseling or rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities. 15 units of upper division or graduate study in the area of learning disabilities; OR the documented equivalent; OR possess a California Community College Learning Disability Eligibility Model Certificate. (All Degree[s] and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from an accredited institution.)
Experience: Evidence of recent experience providing academic, career and disability related counseling for students with disabilities in an educational setting. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with a diverse staff in a team approach toward service provision for students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Evidence of knowledge in implementing state and federal guidelines and academic accommodations as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Must have the ability to understand the implications of and deal effectively with the behaviors resulting from specific disabilities. Experience administering and interpreting various assessment instruments including but not limited to: WAIS-R, WAIS III, WRAT-R, WRAT-3 and Woodcock-Johnson Revised. Two years of full-time experience or the equivalent in one or more of the following: (a) counseling or guidance for students with disabilities, or (b) counseling and/or guidance in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities.
Licenses/Certifications: Other: Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students (E.C. 87360a). The ability to communicate in sign language is highly desirable.
Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Duties may include academic, career, and disability related counseling services to students with disabilities (i.e., deaf, hard of hearing, head injury, psychological, mobility, blind and visually impaired, attention deficit disorder, learning disabilities, etc.). 2. Provide classroom instruction, counseling, disability verification, and assure reasonable accommodation and support services for DSPS students. 3. Provide assessment for determination of eligibility for learning disabilities services using criteria of California Community Colleges Learning Disability Eligibility Model; evaluate student's academic strengths and weaknesses using appropriate measures; develop individual educational support services for students with disabilities. 4. Collaborate with college instructors, counselors and other DSPS personnel to assist students in pursuit of their educational goals. 5. Assignments are based upon the assumption of workload of forty hours weekly, including but not limited to counseling, orientation/assessment, recruitment, advising, instruction and class preparation, evaluation of students, committee work, curriculum and program development, and student activities. 6. Other responsibilities include maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position. 7. Institutional service activities are expected of all faculty members.
Conditions of Employment: 1. Ten-month, tenure-track position. 2. Salary is commensurate with academic preparation, and full-time teaching or equivalent experience with a range from Column C, Step 1 to Column H, Step 6 of the current Faculty Salary Schedule. 3. Medical and dental benefits are provided for the employee and dependents. 4. A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided for the employee. 5. Orientation to college is required as is adherence to Improvement of Instruction policy. 6. Maintain broad knowledge of academic or occupational area and design pedagogy related to learning outcomes. 7.
