The Opportunity:
The Knott Dairy Assistant Manager reports to, assists, and supports the Knott Dairy Center (KDC) Manager. In this role the incumbent must be able to fill-in and perform duties of Manager during their absence. Responsibilities include assisting the Manager with budget planning and forecasting, scheduling and directing personnel resources, and facilities care for major dairy herd and production (milking, calving, breeding, nutrition and feeding, health care, forage utilization, and pasture grazing schedules, livestock sales) to meet the milk supply needs of the Washington State University (WSU) Creamery. In association with the Manager and other staff, the Assistant manager is responsible for ensuring that the KDC is a safe, clean, low-stress livestock environment suitable for teaching, research, extension and optimal milk production. In concert with the manager this position coordinates resources, time and facility issues, communication and organizational issues to coordinate multiple, and simultaneous use for teaching, research, and extension. The assistant manager may teach classes, and may facilitate research and data collection as assigned by the departmental chair. The Assistant Manager is a critical participant in the implementation of the dairy's animal care and nutrient management plans, as well as training of new staff and student employees. The Assistant Manager is an important representative of the Department of Animal Sciences and WSU to the dairy industry.

Monthly Salary:
$4,508.70 - $5,635.87 | Zone 1, Grade 5 In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Required Qualifications:
Positions require a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and two (2) years of progressively responsible relevant experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Practical knowledge and experience with the dairy industry; knowledge of pasture management; knowledge and experience with budgeting and economic forecasting.
A Bachelor's degree in Animal Sciences or closely related field.
A minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in Animal Sciences or related field.
The Department of Animal Sciences at WSU offers the only four-year Animal Sciences degree in the state of Washington.
