The Assistant Director of Internships and Global Learning will advise all Maxwell School graduate and targeted undergraduate students in experiential learning towards professional development to foster post-graduation success. This will involve developing and expanding internship and experiential learning opportunities with external employers to create relevant professional opportunities.
Three (3) plus years experience working in career advising or internship coordination.
Prior experience working with external employers.
Preferred experience working with graduate students.
Preferred experience working with international programming and employers.
Preferred experience working in an institute of higher education.
Preferred experience living or working abroad.
Skills and Knowledge:
This position requires knowledge of experimental programing in public administration, international affairs, and the broader social sciences.
Skills in career advising such as empathy, reflective listening, and pointed advice are important for success.
Program coordination and management along with experience working with external partners such as governments, consulting companies, policy institutes, and other for-profit and non-profit entities.
The ability to maintain relationships and build partnerships is necessary.
Skilled at working with a variety of students, graduate and undergraduate, and from diverse backgrounds.
A talent in collaboration with staff and faculty is needed.
Quality written communication for internal and external audiences is important, as is some experience in marketing.
Keeping organized records and tracking students and internship organizations for use in reporting are paramount skills.
Responsibilities:
Advise and assist graduate students in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) and Master of Arts in International Relations (MAIR) and targeted undergraduate students in internship search and placement processes.
This role involves working with students to clarify their career goals and educational needs, working with Palmer Career Center staff to develop training in internship searches and events that expose students to internship opportunities, and providing individualized internship search assistance.
The Assistant Director will also work with the Associate Director of Student Services to ensure integration of internship experiences and academic programming.
Develop and maintain internship and experiential learning programs with local, national and international partners that create opportunities for graduate students in the department and targeted undergraduate students.
Engage in assessment of internship programs, providers and experiences.
Work with Chair of Department, MAIR Director, Associate Director of Student Services and department faculty to assist in promotion and implementation of programs that allow students to complete internships and coursework in different locations across the world as part of their graduate program of study, including programs with SU Abroad, Maxwell-in-Washington, and the Atlantis Dual-Degree Program. Engage in assessment of global programs.
Lead and provide oversight for the event planning and social media to improve student experience.
Responsible for event logistics, including budget management, vendor coordination, marketing, day-of execution, and communication with external guests and internal stakeholders.
Responsible for strategizing and implementing online brand presence for PAIA Department.
Responsible for the planning, coordination and delegation of the PAIA spring graduation event.
Work with Chair of Department and other faculty to coordinate the solicitation of MPA workshop projects and help manage the assignment of students to project teams.
Other faculty in the department will also occasionally require support in enlisting external organizations to help provide experiential learning opportunities.
In conjunction with the Department chair, coordinate assessment of MPA Workshop experiences.
Under supervision of the Associate Director of Student Service, determine and administer student financial aid awards to help support student participation in internships, experiential learning, and global programming.
