Position Details:
Summary of Duties:
This position will perform professional-level work in a multidisciplinary laboratory in support of the research activities in the study of urban pollution and environmental toxicology. The incumbent will perform a wide range of duties including performing complex investigative procedures; collecting, processing, and analyzing data; and assisting in preparing graphics and reports. The skills expected to successfully perform these duties include basic and advanced molecular biology laboratory skills, organizational skills to plan and coordinate research projects, animal handling skills (including animal husbandry), and biological sample collection.
As the Scientific Assistant you will be required to conduct a range of biological techniques and molecular genetic techniques (e.g., deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA) extraction and isolation, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and real-time PCR, sequencing) to prepare and collect data. Performs data analysis and experimental design in consultation with the Principal Investigator (PI); assists others in the laboratory as needed, conducts general laboratory maintenance, and records data. You must keep exact, detailed records of experimental data and protocols and interpret/document findings through spreadsheets, graphs, and reports using computers, software and statistical packages. In addition, you will operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment.

This is a full time (100% FTE), temporary position. This position is overtime eligible.

This is a temporary appointment. This is a temporary position that is renewed on an annual basis. Appointment renewal is dependent continued funding and project needs.
Monthly Salary:
$4,050.92 - $4,390.00 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications
In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and three (3) years of progressively responsible related professional research experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. A Master's degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline may be substituted for up to one year of the required work experience.
This position requires excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and with a diverse team of faculty, staff and students.
Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.
Must be able to lift 25 lbs, use a ladder, and be able to stand for extended periods of time.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with zebrafish in a research setting including setting up spawns, exposing embryos, dechorionating embryos, imaging with stereomicroscope and digital camera, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) including RNA extraction, complementary DNA (cDNA) synthesis, and TaqMan or similar operation.
