The University of Washington (UW), Department of Pediatrics is currently recruiting a full-time Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor rank, on the Clinical Practice Track. Specific rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications as generally described in UW's Faculty Code Section 24-34. This individual will have the role of Valley Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Director.

Valley Medical Center is seeking a NICU Director to lead our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This leadership role provides a unique opportunity to shape the future of neonatal care, ensuring the highest quality outcomes for newborns and their families. The successful candidate will oversee clinical leadership, operations, and quality improvement in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment while fostering innovation and excellence in neonatal care.

About the Valley Medical Center NICU

Our 29-bed, single-room NICU provides state-of-the-art care in a family-centered environment. Two specialized infant stabilization rooms allow for immediate neonatal resuscitation within the NICU, eliminating the need for transport after stabilization. We have a robust high-risk perinatal program, where neonatologists work closely with maternal-fetal medicine specialists to provide prenatal consultations and coordinated care.

The multidisciplinary care team includes dedicated pharmacists, dietitians, physical therapists, speech therapists, respiratory therapists, social workers, and NICU nurses. Our advanced neonatal services include:

• Therapeutic hypothermia with 24/7 Pediatric Neurology support
• A full range of ventilatory strategies, including high-frequency oscillatory ventilation
• 24/7 in-house coverage by Advanced Neonatal Practitioners under the direction of Attending Neonatologists

Valley Medical Center sees approximately 3,000 deliveries annually, with 200 NICU admissions per year.

Positions are available beginning in Summer/Fall 2025; a specific start date is negotiable.

Key Responsibilities

• Leadership & Operations: Oversee all aspects of NICU operations, including staffing, budgeting, and resource management.
• Clinical Excellence: Collaborate with neonatologists, nurses, and allied health professionals to ensure the highest standards of patient-centered neonatal care.
• Quality & Safety Initiatives: Lead quality improvement projects to enhance patient safety and outcomes.
• Protocol & Policy Development: Implement clinical guidelines, protocols, and policies aligned with best practices.
• Mentorship & Staff Development: Provide coaching, professional development, and leadership to NICU staff.
• Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to The Joint Commission and state/federal regulations governing NICU care.

In addition, clinical work, teaching, scholarship, and service are integral to all Clinical Practice positions. The initial appointment period will be three years, at a minimum, with eligibility for renewal thereafter. Faculty on the clinical practice track hold multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. Clinical Practice track appointments are not eligible for tenure.

The base salary range for this position will be: Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice $18,618 - $27,927 per month ($223,416 - $335,124 annually), Associate Professor of Clinical Practice $21,793 - $32,689 per month ($261,516 - $392,268 annually), Professor of Clinical Practice $24,947 - $37,420 per month ($299,364 - $449,040 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This range is inclusive of base salary provided through the Children's University Medical Group (CUMG) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations. Compensation provided by Children's University Medical Group (CUMG) practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization.

Other compensation associated with this position may include incentive through Children's University Medical Group practice plan. Additional administrative responsibilities may be offered to a specific candidate with appropriate experience and qualifications which may result in an administrative supplement (ADS).

This is an exceptional opportunity for a neonatologist who wishes to spend time in clinical care, education, and to participate in scholarship at an outstanding academic center, as all University of Washington faculty on the Clinical Practice track engage in service, teaching, and research. Our Division has three primary areas of research focus: bench to bedside neonatal neuroprotection/neuroscience, simulation as an educational and clinical competency tool, and global neonatal-perinatal health. We also have an outstanding ethics program at the Treuman Katz Center for Pediatric Bioethics.

The Division of Neonatology has an outstanding fellowship training program, robust clinical/translational and basic research, and provides clinical care at two academic level IV NICUs and several regional level III NICUs. Our mission is to improve the outcome of pregnancy by advancing neonatal scholarship, educating the next generation of neonatal caregivers, and by providing outstanding evidence based neonatal clinical care. All our faculty contribute to this mission.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have an MD or DO degree (or foreign equivalent), medical licensure in the state of Washington and Board Eligibility or Certification in Neonatology (or foreign equivalent) in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and must be eligible for medical licensure in state of Washington by the start date of employment.

Applicants must have completed a US accredited pediatric neonatology residency and a pediatric neonatology fellowship program.

Applicants must have a Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Experience:

Applicants should have prior clinical experience in neonatology, along with demonstrated leadership or administrative experience in a NICU setting.
