Brief Summary of Work for this Position: The Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a full-time lecturer position as a generalist in communication studies. The position will begin August 2025, with the opportunity for renewal based on satisfactory performance evaluation. This position is not eligible for remote teaching.
This position will have a 4/4 teaching load with appropriate service obligations. The successful candidate will enthusiastically embrace the teaching challenges of the department. The ability to teach large lecture as well as seminar-style courses is important. Teaching assignments will emphasize core courses in the undergraduate major as well as areas that align with the interests of the candidate. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to community outreach broadly defined, including applied learning, communication workshops, and other innovative ways of fostering local connections and impact. The successful candidate will also demonstrate an ability to teach and research in ways that connect with diverse students, audiences and community partners.
Service commitments will be negotiated to foster professional enrichment for the selected candidate as well as meet the needs of the department, which could include student mentoring, advising student organizations, and serving on relevant committees within the department and across campus.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
M.A. in Communication Studies
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience: Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated ability to:
Teach large lecture as well as seminar-style courses
Teach core courses, including oursenior capstone, and to create innovative curriculum and pedagogy
Engage in meaningful service and leadership to the department, university, and community, and to develop and facilitate communication workshops
Teach and research in ways that connect with diverse students, audiences and community partners

Primary Function of Organizational Unit: The Department of Communication Studies is a large department within the College of Humanities, Social Sciences and the Arts. We share a commitment to praxis and applied learning. We value excellent teaching, quality research and engagement with the department, university, region and discipline through thoughtful service. We are methodologically diverse; we embrace the breadth of the study of communication and our discipline's social science and humanities roots. The department offers a B.A. in Communication Studies with a broad curriculum, including integrated marketing communication, media production, performance studies, interpersonal and organizational communication, and rhetoric and communication theory. The department also offers an M.A. in Integrated Marketing Communication and hosts a biennial IMC conference.
College/School Information: The College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (CHSSA) is home to 14 academic departments and offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs including the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, and Master of Public Administration as well as combined bachelor's/master's degree programs in Spanish and English. The CHSSA also houses the Gender Studies and Research Center, an interdisciplinary and intersectional community of students, scholars, and advocates committed to social justice and equity.
In addition, the CHSSA offers a full complement of minors including interdisciplinary minors such as Africana studies, American studies, Asian studies, classical studies, European studies, forensic science, journalism, Latin American studies, medical humanities, Middle East and Islamic studies, Native American studies, and women and gender studies. Undergraduate certificates for professional writing and publishing, as well as a number of post-baccalaureate certificates such as conflict management and resolution, emergency and disaster management, forensic science, science and medical writing, women's, gender, and sexuality studies, and Hispanic studies are a part of the college's offerings.
The CHSSA contributes significantly to the curriculum that comprises UNCW's University Studies Program, through which all undergraduates gain a foundation in the liberal arts and develop the transferable skills essential for life in the twenty-first century. The CHSSA strives in its undergraduate programs and in its University Study offerings to nurture creative thinking, intellectual curiosity, diversity and inclusion, and academic integrity in students while providing them with a solid foundation of knowledge in their chosen fields. Graduate programs in the CHSSA are designed to develop intellectual competence and to prepare the student for careers in business, industry, government, teaching or for further study at the doctoral level.Applied learning is a hallmark of the student experience in the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts. Each of the CHSSA's departments requires an applied learning experience as a part of the curriculum for its undergraduate majors. Examples include faculty-directed research, internships, service learning, and capstone courses and projects, all of which challenge students to integrate various strands of knowledge and to apply that knowledge to broader, real-world or real disciplinary situations.
