Job Description: The Public Safety Officer I is responsible to enforce federal and state laws, local ordinances and University rules, regulations, policies and procedures, and to maintain order in an assigned area. Responsible for the detection and prevention of crime and the protection of life and property, providing active crime prevention, safety and security patrols in the community. Good customer service skills and proven oral and written communication skills are essential.

Responsible for the detection and prevention of crime and the protection of life and property and providing active crime prevention, safety and security patrols in the community.
Engages in property checks and calls for service, ensuring adequate visibility of Public Safety on campus, and ensuring departmental standards for community policing are met.
Makes daily reports of activities and writes comprehensive incident and investigation reports and completes all paperwork necessary for proper filing of Student Code of Conduct complaints and/or criminal prosecutions.
Provides other services including: lockouts, escorts for persons and monies, checks doors and windows of unoccupied University buildings, businesses and residential properties.
Answers questions for and directs the public, receives and investigates complaints from the public.
Broadcasts and receives radio messages and sends/receives electronic messages.
Actively engages in innovative problem-solving techniques and procedural justice practices with the community by demonstrating fairness, transparency and impartiality in decision making.
Demonstrates support of the University and Department of Public Safety mission and vision and engages in respectful and ethical behavior towards others. Embraces diversity and inclusion.
Under the general supervision of a superior officer, performs routine patrol duties on an assigned shift. Responds to emergencies, exercising considerable independent judgment.
Work is reviewed by direct observation and through the submission of reports. Supervision is not exercised in this position.
Patrols a specific zone, area or beat on foot, on a bicycle, or in a patrol vehicle. Engages in community oriented policing, interacting with students, faculty, staff, visitors and members of the public.
Responds to and investigates all violations of University rules and regulations, city and county ordinances, state and federal crimes and violations, vehicle accidents, injuries and fires.
Responds to entry, panic, and fire alarms.
Conducts interviews and interrogations of victims, suspects, and witnesses.
Directs traffic and issues parking and traffic tickets as necessary. Maintains order in crowds at events and other public gatherings.
Investigates suspicious activities, and when necessary, conducts warrantless arrests in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and New York State Penal Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law and other state and federal laws.
Provides emergency medical assistance.
Conducts crime scene searches for possible suspects.
Watches for and makes investigations of wanted and missing persons, stolen vehicles and property.
Collects and preserves evidence including weapons and drugs.
Escorts suspects to court and/or Justice Center, and has them booked on charges.
Controls civil disorder.
Other duties as assigned.
