The Inelastic X-ray Scattering (IXS) beamline is a part of the Complex Scattering Program at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), a DOE-funded scientific user facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The program offers a suite of advanced x-ray scattering techniques to study the nano- and meso-scale structure and complex dynamics of heterogeneous systems. The scientific objectives of the IXS beamline are focused on the atomic dynamics in material systems of both applied and fundamental interest using meV-resolved, medium-energy inelastic x-ray scattering with sharp spectral contrast and high momentum resolution.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is seeking an experienced scientist to join the IXS beamline team. The successful candidate will contribute to advancing the science programs at the IXS beamline by exploring its world-class state-of-the-art energy resolution and unique research strengths for soft and hard condensed matter research, engage in user support and participate in upgrade and instrumentation development effort to further enhance the performance of the beamline.
The successful candidate is expected to establish an independent research program that leverages the unique research capabilities of the IXS beamline. Collaboration with members of the Complex Scattering Program and NSLS-II to explore the scientific synergy across beamlines is also encouraged. The level of appointment will be commensurate with the experience and skills of the selected candidate.
Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate are committed to your success. We offer a supportive work environment and the resources necessary for you to succeed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Contribute to beamline operation and support users at the IXS beamline.
- Innovate and upgrade the instrumentation to meet scientific demands and improve beamline performance.
- Develop an independent scientific or technical research and development program that utilizes capabilities offered by the IXS beamline and within the Complex scattering program and NSLS-II.
- Collaborate with in-house staff and external user groups to conduct high-impact research that leverages the unique capabilities of the IXS beamline.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and present results at scientific meetings.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- PhD. in physics, materials science, or a related field.
- At least four (4) years of research experience in structure and dynamics studies of materials using x-ray or neutron scattering techniques.
- Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
- Strong data analysis skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and interact effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technical staff, and users.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience in constructing and/or operating beamlines and supporting users at a synchrotron or a neutron facility.
- Demonstrated experience in high-resolution X-ray and/or neutron inelastic scattering.
- Experience with computational analysis/modeling of dynamic structure factor.
- Significant programing experience in Python or other scientific programming languages.
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
Ability to speak, hear alarms, hear and understand speech.
Additional Information:
Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $101200 - $184000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
