Position Description
Serves as Institutional Veterinarian for TTUHSC El Paso. Examines, diagnoses, and treats diseases of laboratory animals to ensure health of animals used in scientific research and to comply with regulations governing their humane and ethical treatment by performing the following duties.

Major/Essential Functions
Examines and treats animals to detect indications of disease or injury to prevent spread of disease to other animals or workers. Necropsy animals as circumstances dictate.
Provides consultation to investigators regarding anesthetics, surgical procedures, euthanasia, techniques, and general animal care related to animal research.
Participates in the development, implementation, monitoring of budgets and daily financial activities of LARC; collaborates closely with finance personnel within the Office of Research(OR); provides direction as needed to ensure accuracy and maintenance of updated information on all accounts; serves as approval authority on all LARC funds.
Maintain compliance with institutional billing rate policies.
Discuss research projects and daily health checks with staff to plan procedures and prescribe care and treatment of animals.
Provides training and direct surgical and technical support often of a specialized nature to research investigators and technicians in various animal-related techniques as requested.
Conducts formal and on-the-job training of the animal care staff and investigator staffs, as needed.
Responsible for maintaining compliance with NIH guidelines, Federal and state regulations, AAALAC standards for all research and teaching animals maintained by TTUHSC El Paso.
Fulfills supervisory and leadership functions for the IACUC, including attending IACUC meetings and participating in protocol discussions.
Coordinates, complies, and provides reports as requested by the System Veterinarian.
Review all animal care and usage operating policies and standard operating procedures, as necessary. Adhere to all TTUHSC El Paso policies, procedures and processes.
Personally demonstrate, display, and act in accordance with TTUHSC El Paso’s values (Service, Respect, Accountability, Integrity, Advancement, and Teamwork). Actively promote and encourage staff across th institution.

Preferred Qualifications
Post-Doctoral residency, or equivalent, in Laboratory Animal Medicine with 3-5 years experience in laboratory environment preferred. Interest and ability to qualify for the National Board Examination given by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) or foreign equivalent. Interest and ability to obtain Diplomat status in ACLAM or foreign equivalent.
