Job Description: The Syracuse University Art Museum seeks a curatorial assistant to join its team. Reporting to the Interim Chief Curator, the incumbent will assist with conducting research and preparing written content to support SUArt's exhibitions and programs. Additional duties include taking an active role in the realization of the museum's exhibition programming through assisting with the development of permanent collection rotations and loan exhibitions, conducting collections research to update TMS database with materials on artists and permanent collection objects, and collaborating with colleagues in Education, Registration, Visitor Services, and other departments. They will also be expected to provide tours of exhibitions and participate in public or academic programming as needed and provide administrative support for the Interim Chief Curator and perform other day-to-day duties as needed. This is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates who are interested in a curatorial career, as it offers a broad range of firsthand experience in nearly all aspects of the museum.
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in art history, fine arts, museum studies, or a related field.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Works well independently and in a team.
Job Specific Qualifications:
Broad knowledge of art history.
Strong research skills, including archival and oral histories/artist interviews.
Strong writing, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to effective a wide range of audiences, from students, faculty, and members of the general public.
Experience in cataloging objects and data entry in a collections management database.
Responsibilities:
Assist in the realization of exhibitions at the museum. Collaborate with Interim Chief Curator to identify interdisciplinary themes, develop object checklists, and contribute written materials and tombstone labels for permanent collection installations.
Assist with the research and coordination of temporary loan exhibitions, providing written interpretation and tombstone label copy as needed.
Serve as curatorial liaison with SUArts Collections team.
Update and conduct in-depth research on TMS database with materials on artists and permanent collection objects.
Perform research to update cataloguing, adding relevant information and scholarship to museum files, both paper and digital.
Give tours of exhibitions and participate in public or academic programming as needed.
Provide administrative support for the Interim Chief Curator.
