The Tax Law Center at the NYU School of Law is seeking a full-time Associate Director of External Affairs to help shape and implement a comprehensive communications plan and strategy, manage external communications and public affairs, and build relationships with key partners and stakeholders of the Center.
You are an experienced communications or external affairs manager who will represent the Tax Law Center and its mission to external stakeholders. You are eager to help set forth a guiding strategy for advancing the Center's goals through effective communications across all channels, are proficient in working across traditional and digital platforms, and excel at developing and managing relationships.
Responsibilities
The Associate Director of External Affairs will report to the Director of Operations and Strategy and be responsible for:
Coordinating external communications with government, strategic partners, media, and funders, as well as ensuring that the Tax Law Center develops and nurtures positive relationships with these stakeholders
Helping to develop the Center's communications strategy and to execute it by ensuring that day-to-day communications activities across all channels and to all stakeholders support the overall communications goals of the Center and by making adjustments as needed to reflect real time changes to the issue landscape
Managing press inquiries, monitoring and identifying media opportunities to facilitate for Center staff, and helping to prepare Center spokespeople for interviews, including by conducting reporter and outlet background research, conducting interview preparation sessions, and staffing interviews as needed
Managing strategy, audience growth, and regular content for the Center's digital channels, in collaboration with Center staff experts
Supporting outreach to and work with allied organizations to produce aligned agendas and develop content and strategy around key advocacy initiatives
Working with staff to prepare written memos and other public products that capture the technical rigor of the Tax Law Center's work in a clear and accessible way
Supporting the Executive Director and Legal Director on fundraising activities for the Center, including donor research, report writing, and donor tracking
Supervising a communications and development staff member
Requirements
At least 5 years of experience and a strong track record in at least one of the following: communications, public/external affairs, and/or development roles in the public or private sector
Demonstrated strategy and project management skills with experience successfully implementing complex initiatives
Demonstrated experience spotting and adjusting to rapidly-changing developments in the communications landscape
Ability to navigate high-stakes and complex situations under time pressure
Excellent verbal, written, and public speaking/presentation skills
Commitment to advancing the Center's mission and development
Excitement to learn about and communicate to others the importance of tax legal work

This role does not require experience in the tax law field, but it would be a plus to have some familiarity with tax law or policy, a sound understanding of the federal legislative and regulatory processes that may impact the Center's work, and/or experience with communications for an organization producing technical analyses in any area of law or policy.
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $110,000 to $140,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
