The Department of Media and Communication at St. John Fisher University, Rochester, New York invites nominations and applications for a full-time visiting assistant professor of Media and Communication, starting fall 2023.
The candidate's teaching and professional experience should emphasize media studies and strategic communication (advertising and media economics). We are also interested in applicants with research interests in race and gender within media studies and would be able to offer such applicants teaching opportunities aligned with those interests.
The Department of Media and Communication includes two majors: Media & Communication and Public Relations. The department has approximately 75 undergraduates enrolled in the majors.
The Department of Media and Communication focuses on public relations, advertising, film/video, and journalism and has successful alumni at national agencies, including Edelman and Porter Novelli, as well as CBS, Amazon, and NBC. The department faculty have the benefit of teaching small classes and getting to know their students well. The average class size is 21, with no class larger than 35, and some as small as 10. We have a collaborative faculty and offer opportunities to teach in related departments, including Women and Gender Studies, African-American Studies, Arts, and the Honors Program, depending on a candidate's qualifications and background.
The School of Arts and Sciences at St. John Fisher University serves all undergraduate students through 33 programs, the Core general education curriculum, and pre-professional requirements. Visiting faculty in the department carry a 4-4 teaching load and are expected to show a commitment to teaching. They are encouraged to contribute to university-wide committees. An annual travel stipend is available to all full-time faculty.
The successful candidate will be able to teach Intro to Media as well as some of the following courses: Advertising (intro, media buying, design, ad writing); Media and Diversity; Journalism; Media Economics; Media Analytics; and/or Business Communication. The faculty member would also be encouraged to teach at least one course in the University core of his/her choosing, especially in the areas of diversity and inclusion, ethical reasoning, and citizenship and civic engagement, or in our Cardinal Experience course for seniors in which the students complete a significant project connected to the Rochester community.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to be an effective teacher, and so previous teaching experience is expected. Some professional experience is strongly preferred. Knowledge of online teaching methods is a plus.
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the US, and be available to start teaching in fall 2023. The position offers a renewable 3-year term. Moving expenses may be negotiated.
Education / Experience:
Applications are invited from candidates who have completed a master's (MA, MS, MBA, MFA) or PhD. Other terminal degrees will also be accepted. Previous industry experience is preferred.
