The Department of Psychiatry is seeking a full-time clinical research therapist to work across several research and clinical demonstration projects to deliver manualized psychosocial and behavioral interventions to research participants. This position provides an excellent opportunity to gain or improve clinical skills and experience working with diverse community populations, including military personnel. The clinical research therapist will gain important skills and knowledge in providing clinical services in the areas of substance use, chronic pain, and suicide. Supervision toward licensure can also be gained as part of this position. The clinical research therapist will have a home-base at the University of Michigan North Campus Research Complex and will travel throughout the state to deliver in-person intervention sessions. Opportunities for remote work in addition to travel and some office-based work is currently available; some intervention sessions may be delivered remotely, depending on participant availability, however most sessions will occur on location at various treatment centers, clinics or military locations within Michigan.
Collaborate across several research and clinical demonstration projects to deliver manualized psychosocial and behavioral interventions to research participants. Intervention sessions may be one-time brief sessions or multi-sessions that occur over a period of a few weeks. A component of intervention delivery may include the need to conduct risk assessments related to suicidal/homicidal thoughts or substance misuse. Intervention sessions may be conducted in-person (e.g. residential substance use treatment settings, military bases, pain clinics) or remotely (e.g., utilizing video telehealth or phone). This position will require periods of extensive travel to recruitment sites throughout the state of Michigan. Occasional weekend travel will be required and may include overnight stays. A component of intervention delivery may include the need to conduct risk assessments related to suicidal/homicidal thoughts or substance misuse.
Participate in clinical supervision and other tasks related to ensuring fidelity of intervention,
including listening to and rating audio tapes of interventions
Research administrative tasks, including participant tracking and documentation of sessions, contacting participants, and data entry as needed.
Attend team meetings and other meetings related to the successful completion of research
projects.
Work collaboratively with the study team to develop implementation tools interventions. Develop and conduct trainings to members of community on how to deliver the intervention.
- Bachelor's degree with 1-3 years of experience in training, delivering behavioral interventions, or counseling with groups or individuals.
- Experience working on a team and with diverse populations across multiple settings.
- Attention to detail, and the ability to accurately follow protocols and therapy manuals.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced recruitment environment and quickly shift between required tasks.
- Excellent organizational skills, professionalism, and attention to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
- The ability to adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines.
- Study recruitment will occasionally occur over a weekend, which will require travel within the state and potential overnight stays.
- This position will require the candidate to undergo a background check by the U.S. government.

- Training in and practice delivering motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral-based therapy is preferred.
- Previous training and/or extensive experience working in clinical research with manualized interventions is highly preferred.
- Experience using MS Excel, Access and REDCap are preferred.
- Previous experience conducting health related research and/or with substance abuse or high-risk populations is preferred, but not required.
- Experience assessing risk (e.g., suicidal, homicidal, substance use) and with triaging patient concerns to supervisors is preferred.
- Knowledge or experience working with active-duty members of the military or Veterans is preferred, but not required.
Typically M-F 9am-5pm; There will be a period of time when weekends (including overnight stays) will be required.
Under Michigan law, a criminal history check including fingerprinting is required as a condition of transfer or employment for this position.
