Job Description:What We're Looking ForThe Scientific Innovations in Composites and Engineering Materials group (
SIC'EM) is looking to hire two individuals at the level of Research Scientist to start immediately. These complimentary positions will serve in the Sic'em group housed within the Baylor School of Engineering and Computer Science and located at the Baylor Research and Innovation Collaborative (BRIC). These positions will support the laboratory by leading new efforts in technology development in the areas of structural analysis and testing of aerospace polymer matrix composites.
The two researchers will lead sponsored research efforts to advance the state of the art in each of 1) NDE/NDT-Informed techniques in physics-based predictive modeling of composite structures and 2) constituent materials characterization and composite materials testing as produced and with defects. The researchers will work closely with other Sic'em researchers and each other to establish new techniques in quantitative analysis from NDE/NDT datasets from composites inspection to complement existing and future NDE/NDT FAA certification efforts. These positions will integrate into the existing group structure and the successful applicant must be able to adapt their focus based on the changing needs of the research group. Our ideal candidates will possess the following:
Required: - A Masters in mechanical engineering or related field is required.
- Three to five years of experience (which can include graduate studies) in finite element methods development, composite structural analysis, and/or materials testing is preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, Word, and Power Point.
- Proficient in MATLAB or similar mathematical analysis software.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and an understanding of the different needs of our engineers and scientists.
- Ability to work both independently and in group environments.
- Ability to work under pressure, exuding a mature demeanor while multi-tasking in a deadline-oriented environment with accuracy and consistency.
Preferred: - A Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or related field is preferred.

- Familiarity with static and fatigue testing of polymer matrix composites.
- Familiarity with developing testing plans and procedures from ASTM standards.
- Familiarity with laminated polymer composite structures, materials, and fabrication techniques.
- Familiarity with polymer matrix composite structural damage and defect mechanisms.
- Familiarity with ultrasonic non-destructive testing is desirable.
- Ability to read and interpret materials test standards.
What You Will Do - Oversee aerospace grade composite manufacturing, materials characterization, and structural testing
- Oversee the development of composite materials analysis methods including analytical and numerical (i.e., FEA) techniques

- Participate in periodic engineering design reviews to improve testing protocols and processes
- Aid in nondestructive testing of laminated composites over a range of environmental conditions
- Oversee interactions with researchers in NDT/NDE-based inspection
- Participate in regular research team discussions
- Receive technical training on the use of commercial finite element software to analyze composites and damaged composite structures
- Receive technical training on the use of high value scientific equipment for testing (i.e., tensile testing, xray CT, SEM microscopy, single-probe and phased array ultrasonic testing, etc.)
- Interface with students, faculty, administration and visitors to support Baylor's mission
- Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor's mission
- Ability to comply with University policies
