The Director of Anchorage Animal Care & Control (AACC) is responsible for the leadership and oversight of AACC, the open-admission animal shelter of the Municipality of Anchorage. Responsibilities include: oversight of shelter operations including a 25-person staff; hiring, training, and leading staff; providing expert opinion to legal counsel and other public entities pertaining to animal cruelty and neglect cases and best practices in the care of animals; and ensuring compliance with client contract and company safety requirements.
The Municipality of Anchorage has contracted Denali Universal Services to operate all aspects of AACC since 1999. The shelter has an annual intake of 4,500-4,800 domestic animals. AACC's programs include partnerships with private rescue groups to save lives; an active public relations program and social media presence; outreach programs such as the Pet Food Bank, Shelter Cat Storytime, and dog-bite prevention program for elementary school students; post-adoption behavior support; and foster and volunteer programs. AACC enforces Anchorage Municipal Code Title 17 to ensure public safety and the humane care of animals. Animal Control Officers respond to calls throughout the entire Municipality of Anchorage which encompasses nearly 2,000 square miles and is home to just under 300,000 residents. Responsible for all aspects of Anchorage Animal Care & Control's operations.
Supervise the overall management and operations of AACC.
Oversee the policies and procedures of AACC to ensure a safe environment for staff and volunteers and the humane treatment of sheltered animals.
Provide consistently high-quality services to the Municipality of Anchorage as contracted.
Ensure staff is trained and implementing best practices for the humane care and treatment of animals.
Direct all operations of AACC and maintain compliance with the contract between Denali Universal Services and the Municipality of Anchorage; Municipal Code Title 17 Animals; and any other requirements as appropriate to the AACC operations.
Determine protocols in consultation with the staff veterinarian for animal vaccinations, parasite and disease control, population management and appropriate housing of sheltering animals.
Oversee the staff veterinarian’s implementation of euthanasia, vaccinations, and on-site spay and neuter services.
Represent AACC in animal cruelty investigations, including preparation of documentation, providing court testimony and/or professional opinion to attorneys.

Five (5) years of paid work experience in animal care and control
Two (2) years’ experience as manager of an animal care and control center, shelter or similar program
