The Division of Animal and Food Industry Services, Office of Laboratory Services, seeks a Poultry Diagnostician/Laboratory Director for the Harrisonburg Regional Animal Health Laboratory. We promote the economic growth and development of Virginia agriculture, provide consumer protection and encourage environmental stewardship. The purpose of this position is to direct and administer the operations of a regional animal health diagnostic laboratory and to provide specialized and expert services in the area of poultry diagnostics and regulatory programs for the Office of Laboratory Services and the Office of Veterinary Services. Duties include poultry necropsies, overseeing all poultry diagnostic testing, assisting in administering the National Poultry Improvement Plan, and managing and directing the personnel and daily activities of the Harrisonburg Regional Animal Health Laboratory. Degree in veterinary medicine from an AVMA accredited/approved college or, alternatively, an AVMA listed college plus certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Students is required as well as board certification (or board eligible) by the American College of Poultry Veterinarians. This position requires knowledge of poultry disease diagnostic methodology, poultry disease surveillance, and disease management for both integrated and non-integrated flocks. Knowledge and/or experience in a range of laboratory diagnostic procedures, such as microbiology, serology, virology, etc. Strong administrative, managerial and supervisory skills with the demonstrated ability to evaluate, motivate and coach employees; to promote and demonstrate strong teamwork and commitment to customer service. Familiarity with operation of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP), and state cooperative agreement programs. Clinical and/or diagnostic experience in poultry medicine or field experience with the poultry industry and its practices. Proficiency with computer applications, basic office software and laboratory information management systems. Requires excellent oral/written communication and customer service skills. The successful candidate must be able to work collaboratively as a team member to assist with system wide workload as needed. Physical demands include excellent visual and manual abilities as well as other conditions needed for performing necropsies. The selected applicant must have and maintain a valid driver’s license with a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway safety. This position may require occasional evening/weekend work. Prefer experience with regulatory veterinary medicine related to livestock and poultry. Hiring Salary Range: $90,000 to $120,000 annually.
The final candidate must successfully complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check. Per the Governor’s Executive Directive Number Eighteen (2021) Ensuring a Safe Work Place, effective 9/1/21, upon hire all new VDACS employees must disclose their vaccination status to the agency’s Human Resource Office. Employees fully vaccinated must also provide documentation to verify this status. Employees who are not fully vaccinated must undergo weekly COVID-19 testing and disclose weekly the results of those tests to the VDACS Human Resource Office.
