Pierce College is transitioning back to working on campus after more than a year of primarily-remote work. One or two days in the office per week will be required at first (other days remote). This will increase over time. Health and safety precautions are in place.

The Early Childhood Specialist will be responsible for the overall health and welfare of children ages 1 to 5 years old, who are enrolled in the Child Development Center. The Early Childhood Specialist will provide a stimulating and developmentally appropriate educational environment which encourages cognitive, social, emotional and adaptive skills. This position involves monitoring and supervising children, leading activities, assisting staff in maintaining a safe and positive environment, tracking and reporting children’s progress and development, meeting with parents and other staff members and maintaining open and cooperative communication.

Classroom Supervision and Personal Interactions:
Provide a safe and clean environment to ensure children’s safety. Identify potential risks and hazards. Engage children in daily educational activities as well as schedules and routines such as hygiene (e.g. washing hands), lunch/snacks, naps, free time, field trips and transitioning between classroom and playground. Implement activities that promote the development of social, creative, motor, language and physical skills. Maintain awareness of children and staff in the classroom to ensure legal ratios are upheld. Ensure that each child is given appropriate levels of individual attention and guidance. Adapt teaching methods if necessary to the child’s individual needs. Foster independence and self-help skills while promoting respect, good behavior and habits. Communicate with Director/Pedagogical Leader and Lead Teacher regarding information and insights that affect the efficient and cohesive functioning of the program.
Oversees health and safety of the classroom to ensure a stimulating, caring, positive, and clean environment. Assist in developing appropriate early childhood education programs for children ranging from 1 to 5 years of age. Provide opportunities that encourage curiosity, exploration and problem solving applicable to developmental stages and learning styles. Help maintain daily schedules, prepare classroom setting, implement curriculum, document student learning, and supervise children. Compile individual assessments of each child’s progress and enter data into the online assessment tool. Through observations and assessments, detect developmental or cognitive difficulties and apply necessary corrections or teaching methods under the direction of Supervisor or Director. Maintain open communication with parents and staff. Participate in staff meetings, in service training, and District activities. Comply with state requirements and adhere to policies as stated in the Child Development Center handbook.
Communicate regularly with staff and parents in a professional manner that demonstrates respect for diverse learning styles and cultural differences. Ability to listen attentively and maintain confidentiality Identify the strengths and needs of the classroom. Explain procedures and program routines and communicate with Early Childhood Program Specialist 4 and/or Director. Receive visitors, answer telephone inquiries, support front office staff and perform miscellaneous job duties as assigned.
State ECE certificate.
Six (6) months of experience working in ECE.
Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field (Psychology, Sociology, Human Development, Home Economics, Family Studies, Social Work, or Special Education along with 20 credits in Early Childhood Education).
A minimum of one (1) year experience working with children, 1-5 years old, who are enrolled in a group setting to include program planning, developing and presenting educational activities and/or lesson plans.
Basic computer knowledge in:
MS Office (Word and Outlook): Create, format, edit, preview, print, and save documents.
Knowledge of and experience with early childhood education theory and practices, including child development, developmentally appropriate practices, observation and ongoing assessment.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records, files reports and correspondence.
Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations while maintaining professional composure.
Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
Ability to direct and organize activities.
Demonstrated ability to establish goals, prioritize tasks and keep deadlines.
Ability to incorporate lessons and activities.
Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
Knowledge of appropriate techniques for diapering, sanitation, napping, feeding, and toilet training.
Ability to create environments which provide for the inclusion of all children, including children with disabilities, diverse language, socioeconomic and/or cultural backgrounds.
Adheres to high standards of integrity and honesty; complies with laws, rules, policies and procedures; follows guidelines of Family Educational Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) and maintains confidentiality.

Ability to regularly travel between worksites in Puyallup and Lakewood.
Valid Food Handlers Permit upon employment.
Completion of HIV/AIDS training upon employment.
Written proof of TB testing prior to starting work.
Valid First Aid and CPR Card upon employment.
Willingness and ability to operate Pierce College van and meet the following requirements: Valid Washington State Driver’s license.
Proof of personal vehicle insurance.

Terms of Employment:
Recruiting to fill three vacancies. The vacancies are full-time (40 hours per week) classified-cyclic, 11.13 months, overtime-eligible positions with Pierce College District. The primary work location will be at Pierce College, Puyallup but infrequent travel to Pierce College campuses or sites may occur. Work hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. These positions may be subject to reassignment between campuses or sites.
Salary & Benefits:
The starting salary range of this position is $2,509.00 - $2,864.00 a month (dependent upon qualifications), with annual periodic increments up to $3,294.00. However, your paycheck is just part of the total compensation package. There is an outstanding benefits package which is worth an additional value equivalent to about 30% of your salary. Physical Work Environment:
This position works indoors and outdoors in an Early Childhood Education Classroom. During this time, core staff approved by their supervisors to come onto campus are covered by a safety plan that follows social distancing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protocols. This includes minimizing close contact by limiting time on campus; conducting meetings virtually; and implementing other creative strategies to reduce the density of employees on campus to keep everyone safe.

In 1967, more than 1,500 students walked through the doors of Pierce College sites with a special goal in mind: to further their education inside their own community. Then called Clover Park Community College, students attended classes in a variety of locations throughout Pierce County. The college held its first graduation ceremony on June 7, 1968. Seven students earned their associate degrees, and more than 200 completed the college’s Adult High School program that year. After a successful first year, the first order of business was to change the name to Fort Steilacoom Community College. A permanent campus was established on 146 acres overlooking Fort Steilacoom Park and Lake Waughop. In 1987, the college began focusing on expansion and growth of the Puyallup site. The college purchased 123 acres near South Hill, and the new campus’ first permanent building, the Gaspard Education Center, was dedicated in 1990. The campus continued to expand, and in 1996 the Brouillet Library Science building opened. Pierce College Puyallup was recognized by the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges in 1999 as the state’s 34th community college and the second college in Pierce College District 11.
