Job Summary: This position works under general supervision to perform skilled gardening work in the maintenance of grounds, landscapes and other exterior systems at Pierce College campuses. This includes cleaning, operating, monitoring and repairing manual, power and motorized tools. Occasionally instructs the work of others, including inmates and students as temporarily or regularly assigned to gardening. This position reports to the campus Grounds Services Supervisor and may be located at either the Fort Steilacoom or Puyallup campuses.
Landscapes, Grounds and Vegetation:
At a skilled work level will clean, monitor, maintain, repair, replace, install, modify, construct and/or fabricate lawns, fields, beds, areas, trees, shrubs, plants and various other grounds, landscapes and vegetation.
Tools and Equipment:
At a skilled work level will clean, operate, monitor, maintain and repair manual, power and motorized tools and equipment.
Exterior Structures, Fixtures, Equipment and Systems:
At a skilled work level will clean, operate, monitor, maintain, repair, replace, install, modify, construct and/or fabricate fences, gates, signs, features, irrigation systems and various other exterior structures, fixtures, equipment and systems.
Hardscapes, Exterior Surfaces:
At a skilled work level will clean, monitor, maintain, repair, replace, install, modify, construct and/or fabricate parking lots, roads, drives, walkways, curbing and various other exterior surfaces.
At a skilled work level will operate and maintain utility carts, forklifts and various other vehicles.
Operate two-way radios, cell phones, computers and other electronic devices.
Remove snow and ice from building entrances, walkways and parking lots.
Respond to and perform emergency functions, as required.
Observe and report suspicious activity.
Be accountable for assigned keys, tools, equipment and supplies.
Maintain inventories and submit requisitions for tools, supplies and equipment to supervisor.
Perform other related duties, as assigned.
High School Diploma or GED.
2 years’ experience in commercial grounds and landscape maintenance to include; irrigation systems controls maintenance/repairs, commercial landscape equipment operation, maintenance & basic service/repair (Utility vehicles, large mowers, edger’s etc.).
Use of computers for sending/receiving emails, time reporting, leave requests & training.
A combination of education and experience may substitute for years of experience.

Terms of Employment: This is a full time (40 hours per week) overtime eligible position with Pierce College District. Pierce College is looking to fill 2 vacancies, 1 at the Fort Steilacoom Campus and 1 at the Puyallup Campus.
Infrequent travel to Pierce College campuses or sites may occur. Work hours are between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. (Summer hours will vary), Monday through Friday, to include occasional evenings and weekends. These positions may be subject to reassignment between campuses or sites.
Salary & Benefits: The starting salary range of this position is $3,144.00 to $3,535.00 a month (dependent upon qualifications), with annual periodic increments up to $3,616.00. Physical Work Environment: The position requires working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements; wildlife, climbing ladders and working at heights as well as stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching and climbing. Must be able to stand and/or walk for over 80% of the work day. The ability to lift 50 pounds and move 100 pounds or more is required. Position requires the ability to bend; stoop and twist at the waist frequently; reach from knees to shoulder-level frequently and above shoulder level occasionally; perform repetitive arm/hand motion constantly; constant handling and/or grasping; climbing stairs and ladders occasionally; and tolerate frequent carrying, constant pushing and/or pulling, frequent vibration from equipment, and occasional above or below temperatures; constant exposure to dust, chemicals, and equipment noise can be expected; hearing should be within normal limits to be able to communicate with students and staff; and must have clear vision, with or without correction to constantly notice details. In 1967, more than 1,500 students walked through the doors of Pierce College sites with a special goal in mind: to further their education inside their own community. Then called Clover Park Community College, students attended classes in a variety of locations throughout Pierce County. The college held its first graduation ceremony on June 7, 1968. Seven students earned their associate degrees, and more than 200 completed the college’s Adult High School program that year. After a successful first year, the first order of business was to change the name to Fort Steilacoom Community College. A permanent campus was established on 146 acres overlooking Fort Steilacoom Park and Lake Waughop. In 1987, the college began focusing on expansion and growth of the Puyallup site. The college purchased 123 acres near South Hill, and the new campus’ first permanent building, the Gaspard Education Center, was dedicated in 1990. The campus continued to expand, and in 1996 the Brouillet Library Science building opened. Pierce College Puyallup was recognized by the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges in 1999 as the state’s 34th community college and the second college in Pierce College District 11.
