This role provides leadership, direction and oversight to US businesses by overseeing the delivery of a comprehensive Records program with integrated people, policy, processes, and technology in accord with Records Information Lifecycle requirements. This expert level position will transform the Records governance accountability model, manage supplier relationships, and promote compliance with recordkeeping standards and frameworks. The incumbent has significant technical expertise, insurance experience, and is responsible for designing and overseeing compliance programs to support business growth, manage risk, and operate effectively to achieve assurances at the lowest program cost. This job includes strategic planning; the development and implementation of policies, standards, procedures, controls, and assurances for the management and retention of recorded information assets; communication and training for all business units; and program compliance monitoring.
Under AVP/VP management, this position has wide latitude of creativity, independent decision making and judgment to plan, develop, implement and accomplish goals.
Develops, designs and executes the US Records program, including:
Oversee the implementation of compliance programs and resources to ensure that the execution of corporate strategies, initiatives and projects comply with applicable laws and regulations.
Monitor industry and regulatory environment and make changes required for compliance programs to preemptively avoid/minimize regulatory risks.
Develop and maintain a Records Retention Schedule and other policies, standards, and processes.
Partner with management and staff in all areas of the organization to strategically implement and sustain compliance with regulatory requirements.
Partner with senior leaders on key aspects of Records governance:
Data Governance Advisory Council - to provide guidance regarding Recordkeeping policies, practices and coordinate strategic technology investments that improve efficiency while reducing risk.
Deliver communications and training to assist compliance.
Partner cross-enterprise to ensure that critical regulatory risks are effectively managed through the orderly implementation of new laws and regulations, regulatory corrective actions and the protection of sensitive customer information.
Develop and implement standards in Records management in the context of applicable external national standards and codes of practice.
Design and implement a plan to transition from paper to electronic recordkeeping as appropriate.
Review, monitor, and advise on group and departmental Records management systems and practices to align with corporate standards as appropriate.
Interface with customers, regulators and other third parties concerning Records management practices.
Interfaces with IT Security, Privacy, etc. to ensure that Records management practices meet legal requirements in respect of these related areas of legal compliance.
Partner with Compliance, Internal Audit, and Enterprise Risk Management to conduct oversight of Records practices, compliance, and risk analysis.
Select and manage vendors as appropriate to supply products, services and software as required to support the Records program.
Develop and employ compliance audit protocols, monitoring tools and other approaches to assess the effectiveness of the compliance program.
Design risk analysis tools and protocols for use in: (a) annual/on-going compliance program planning, and (b) assessing business risks in the execution of compliance projects.
Determine information system needs, automated tools, etc. required to execute the compliance program.
Collaborate across the enterprise to promote alignment of compliance positions and to ensure efficient use of shared compliance-related services.
Direct a technical and professional staff in support of implementation of compliance programs, including internal control design, employing appropriate manual or automated solutions relative to risk mitigation.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
AIIM or ARMA certification (e.g. Certified Information Professional, Information Governance Professional, Certified RecordsManager) or equivalent certification required.
Minimum 10 years of proven leadership experience in managing corporate Records management programs in the insurance or financial services industry.
Strong program management skills with ability to manage cross functional teams and high-level interpersonal skills, including ability to work collaboratively with and influence senior management.
Ability to manage complex projects contemporaneously.
Strong technical proficiency and knowledge of information systems.
Demonstrated team building, coaching, mentoring, and leadership skills.
Strong problem solving, program and project management skills.
Comprehensive knowledge of Unum's functional operations and inter-dependencies between/among business areas, as well as the computer systems and technical platforms employed to administered Unum's business activities and regulatory reporting.
Proven ability to understand and strategically apply insurance regulation to company processes, procedures or systems in support of corporate business objectives.
Strategic understanding of the insurance marketplace.
Understanding of quality control and testing for insurance-related systems.
Excellent communication skills and public speaking abilities with all corporate levels including senior management and external contacts. Strong planning, conflict resolution, organizational and partnering skills.
