The Veterinarian at Anchorage Animal Care and Control (AACC) is responsible for managing shelter veterinary services; providing professional opinions to AACC leadership, legal counsel and other public entities; participating in the AACC leadership team; and ensuring compliance with client contract and company safety requirements. The Veterinarian reports to the Director of AACC. The position can be full-time or part-time.
The Municipality of Anchorage has contracted Denali Universal Services to operate all aspects of AACC since 1999. The shelter has an annual intake of 4,500-4,800 domestic animals. AACC's programs include partnerships with private rescue groups to save lives; an active public relations program and social media presence; outreach programs such as the Pet Food Bank, Shelter Cat Storytime, and dog-bite prevention program for elementary school students; post-adoption behavior support; and foster and volunteer programs. AACC enforces Anchorage Municipal Code Title 17 to ensure public safety and the humane care of animals. Animal Control Officers respond to calls throughout the entire Municipality of Anchorage which encompasses nearly 2,000 square miles and is home to just under 300,000 residents. Oversee AACC veterinary assistant.
Administer and manage on-site spay and neuter services.
Conduct health examinations on shelter animals, determine medical needs and administer treatment.
Provide minor sedation, medical and minor surgical care.
Provide animal examinations and documentation for animal cruelty cases.
Determine protocols for animal vaccinations, parasite control, population management, and housing.
Prepare protocols and determine appropriate product use for sanitation and disinfection to minimize zoonotic and non-zoonotic disease transmission
Make decisions regarding and manage on-site and field emergency animal medical situations.
Oversee euthanasia program including development of protocols, procedures and products used. Participate with euthanasia determinations and provide for humane euthanasia.
Administer rabies, other vaccinations and microchips.
Order and maintain all DEA scheduled drugs, including storage security, usage and recording per DEA requirements.
Instruct the Veterinary Assistant or other animal-care staff in the use and documentation of all drugs, medicines and care of animals.
Oversight of medical and surgical program; including surgical schedule, and ordering and maintaining equipment and supplies.
Assist with the training of staff in safe and humane care, feeding, housing, euthanasia and disposal of animals.
Provide training and supervision to the Veterinary Assistant and Kennel Technicians in the care, feeding and humane handling of animal as related to an animal’s medical needs.
Promote safe and humane handling of all animals.
Participate in animal behavior evaluations and adoption determinations, as needed.
May be asked to participate with the AACC Director in providing court testimony and professional opinion to attorneys in cruelty cases

Bachelor’s Degree plus Degree in Veterinary Medicine
Licensed to practice Veterinary Medicine in the State of Alaska
Must be able to obtain DEA Controlled Substance Certificate upon hire
Strong communication and organization skills
Able to proficiently speak, read, understand and write English
Final candidate will be required to successfully complete a post-offer pre-hire physical and functional capacity exam.
