Transplant/Urology/Plastic (4A) nurses are experts in caring for patients after kidney, pancreas and liver transplants and complex plastics-related surgeries.4A nurses are also specialized in urology, nephrology, CAPD, as well as a variety of other medical and surgical services. We use a multidisciplinary approach to patient care through collaboration with the entire health care team in daily charge nurse/physician/case management rounds and weekly transplant team rounds. Education for patients and their families is a focus on our unit. Through use of demonstration and interactive teaching methods, we are able to promote lifestyle/behavior changes and help ease the transition from hospital to home. An active self- governance committee as well as our representation on hospital wide committees contributes to providing a dynamic unit. 4A is actively involved in Releasing Time to Care, an innovative lean project to increase a nurses time for patient care. Prescriptive tools offered methods to lead staff toward safer, more dignified, more reliable and efficient care. The tools in the modules have offered opportunities to be self-directed in their learning and structural empowerment. The result of working through these modules has engaged and empowered staff to challenge the status quo and lead change in their environment and practice. 14A General Surgery unit at OHSU is an acute care unit specializing in major abdominal surgery including but not limited to; colorectal, gastric by-pass, major hernia repairs, Nissens, fistula repairs and fistula management.
