The Technology Transfer Postdoctoral Fellowship Program provides an experiential learning experience for doctorally trained research scientists in opportunity assessment, intellectual property strategy, business intelligence, market analysis, negotiation tactics and agreement review. This training position is open to individuals who are interested in advancing their knowledge of, and experience in, invention and innovation processes, technology transfer, entrepreneurism, and who recognize the value of these skills to improve the economic condition of rural regions and communities. The Postdoctoral Scholar will benefit from experiential, educational and data management opportunities. They include: Experiential (Approximately 80% of the postdoctoral scholar's time) Learn policies, procedures and regulations related to technology transfer practices and intellectual property protection. Scout for and assess innovations for eligibility of ECU resources to develop into potential new products. Manage, organize and support the I-Corps@ECU program. Conduct customer interviews. Identify subject matter experts to facilitate translational research activities. Identify commercialization grant opportunities and provide support to faculty innovators Serve as a campus advocate for innovation and commercialization. Serve as an advocate for promoting rural economies with ECU research and innovation Establish effective networks with internal and external partners, such as consultants, the Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC), the North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBC), and the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM). Instructional (Approximately 10% of the postdoctoral scholar's time) Provide lectures/seminars to internal and external constituents on innovation, intellectual property, commercialization, and the lean launch method used in the I-Corp program. Data Management (Approximately 10% of the postdoctoral scholar's time) Enter and track information into the data management system. Analyze program activities and prepare reports. Candidates who show a mastery to the above activities will be given the opportunity to gain more advanced skills in agreement negotiation and management. Candidates may also serve as the project lead/manager for special programs. Special programs may include software implementation and oversight, conferences, events, student mentoring and/or other projects supported by the Office of Licensing and Commercialization. Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.
