The Assistant Director of Residence Life (ADRL), as a member of the Student Development team, promotes the learning community that exists in the Residence Halls and helps the Residence Life office function efficiently. The ADRL supervises and mentors the resident assistance (RA) team, provides programming for the hall, develops relationships with residents, oversees the functioning of the Residence Halls, assists with functions related to Residence Life, implement programs to prevent conduct concerns, and helps oversees the conduct process.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND FUNCTIONS
Teamwork and Collaboration.
Committed to serving as a team player within the department, Student development and Bluefield College.
Serves as a liaison with Health Services, counseling services, facilities management, food services, campus safety, and the business office.
Promotes good communication and relationships with students, Student Development personnel, administration, faculty and the community.
Maintains consistent, weekly contact with the housekeeper assigned to their building.
Serves on appropriate Student Development committees as needed.
Uncompromisingly Safe and Maintained Facilities
Works closely with RAs and Physical Plant staff to maintain the Residence Halls.
Manages the overall operation of the residence facility, keeping it comfortable, safe and sanitary.
Expresses concern about the security and safety of the residence and its occupants and reports all security concerns to the appropriate people.
Opens and closes the Residence Hall before and after each college break.
Plans and implements duty schedules for RA’s.
Administers room sign-up for their individual Residence Hall and assists with the overall campus process.
Walks through their assigned Residence Hall every day to be aware of the general condition of the halls.
Loving Redemptive Discipline
Enforces all College policies, rules and regulations governing Residence Halls and houses.
Assists RA staff with individual counseling and roommate conflict mediation.
Consults on disciplinary problems in the residence halls, as well as holds discussions with students referred by RAs concerning inappropriate behavior.
Hears and adjudicates campus disciplinary cases for violations up to and including 3rd Alcohol offenses and 2nd Drug Offenses.
Involvement Over Programming:
Works closely with RAs and Community Life Coordinators in planning activities.
Oversees programming for assigned residential area.
Counsels and advises students about personal, spiritual, academic or social issues.
Coordinates with the Director of Residence Life to plan and implement other programs and events based on student’s class and needs.
Purposeful Hiring and Training:
Takes leadership in the selection, training, and evaluation of the Residence Life staff.
Assumes responsibility for organizing the Resident Assistants (RAs) in the Residence Hall.
Orienting them to their responsibilities.
Conducting training sessions and weekly staff meetings.
Evaluates the individual RA as well as the overall Residence Life Program.
Supervise student employees to include interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning and directing work, coaching, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Must have a mindset of mentoring employees under supervision. Should be able to lead in a way that sets a good example, promotes teamwork, and encourages a positive, efficient work environment.
Participates in campus Residence Life staff orientation. Implements in-service training sessions as requested.
Takes administrative responsibility for all tasks assigned by the Director of Residence Life.
Maintains regular contact with the RA’s to check on their progress.
Attends weekly meetings with the Director of Residence Life and/or the Student Development Office
Plans to be on campus during any period in which there are no classes, but during which the Residence Halls are open.
Shares rotating on duty responsibilities with other Residence Life Staff.
Oversees summer housing staff.
Assist office Manager with summer group needs when on campus.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE
A minimum of 1 to 3 years’ experience in a similar position and/or training in performing similar tasks as required. Bachelor’s Degree required.
Experience with occupancy management, training others, supervision, assessment, goal setting, and accomplishment.
Christian Commitment: eligible candidates must be a thoughtful and articulate Christian and an active member of a Christian evangelical church. The individual must understand and support the College’s “Christ-centered Education” by expressing an evangelical Christian profession of faith and demonstrate the ability to integrate a Christian perspective in their work.
Must understand the stated mission of the college and understand how the promotion and sustaining of a Christian community at the college is an essential component.
Demonstrated success building relationships, programs, and services between diverse internal constituencies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Basic computer knowledge (MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Excel).
