The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) seeks applications and nominations for the position of Department Chair.
The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department is entering a new period of intentional and sustained growth that is supported by substantial institutional investment. This investment includes the commitment of resources for aggressive hiring of multiple faculty in both traditional and emerging areas and represents a significant opportunity for new department leadership to increase the stature and ranking of the department. The MAE Department has a culture and history of excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Research expenditures, PhD enrollment, and support from federal and industrial sponsors have more than doubled in the past decade. Numerous faculty have received prestigious NSF CAREER, AFOSR and ONR Young Investigator awards. Situated in a state-of-the-art 145,000 ft2 facility, the department is the largest on campus and is home to 27 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 5 teaching faculty, 13 staff, over 230 graduate students (including 110 PhD students), over 1,000 undergraduate students, and over 12,000 living alumni. The vision of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department is to be nationally and internationally recognized as a premier program in mechanical and aerospace engineering education, research, and scholarship. This vision is supported by Missouri S&T's institutional goal to be a leading public technological research university for discovery, creativity, and innovation. The Missouri S&T administration, led by a new Chancellor, the faculty of the department, and an active and engaged academy of distinguished alumni are eager to support and enable new department leadership in successfully guiding the department toward fully achieving this vision of excellence.
Qualified candidates will be internationally recognized scholars with an earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field and will have demonstrated an outstanding record of excellence in research, teaching, and service at a level commensurate with appointment as a tenured, full professor. Competitive applicants will possess visionary leadership abilities, rooted in shared governance, which will continue to guide the department to flourish at the highest levels of achievement in all facets of scholarship and especially with respect to promoting sponsored research and faculty mentoring. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in communication, so as to effectively work with faculty, staff, students, administrators, corporate representatives, and alumni, and will serve as a strong advocate for the department. The candidate will have a strong commitment to diversity and will support the continued development of an inclusive, progressive, and vibrant climate. Exceptionally qualified candidates for this position may be considered for an endowed professorship.
