About The Naval Postgraduate School: The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is a graduate level, research-oriented institution serving the US and allied military services and federal government civilians. Located in Monterey, California, NPS offers masters and doctoral degree programs in a range of science, engineering, technical, management and national security disciplines.
The Institutional Research Analyst works in Institutional Research Group at the Naval Postgraduate School. The IR Group supports data-informed decision making across a range of NPS’s strategic planning, resourcing, evaluation, review and assessment processes. The IR Group is responsible for data gathering, research design, modeling, assessment, analysis, forecasting and reporting functions, all associated with institutional research and evaluation at NPS. The IR Group reports to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and plays a central role in the planning and assessment processes for NPS.
Primary duties include:
Design, collection, analysis, presentation, and communication of student, program and academic data about the university.
Design and collection of data in support of the university’s internal program reviews, strategic planning, and accreditation.
Coordination, collection, analysis, and reporting of data about the university to the Department of the Navy and other external and governmental agencies.
Responding to requests for data and reports internal to NPS -- from departments, schools, and central offices as needed, collaborating with directors and leaders on the interpretation and use of data in decision-making and institutional effectiveness.
Coordination, implementation, and analysis of selected student and faculty surveys.
Ad hoc research, analysis and reporting initiatives for the purpose of institutional effectiveness and improvement.
Enhancing the institutional research capability of the university through communication and collaboration with appropriate other NPS departments.
Participation in and contribution to the development of academic data systems at the university.
Development and maintenance of the Institutional Research website, both internal and public.
Individual must possess, or develop, the knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.
Knowledge of relational databases and experience designing, maintaining and reporting from large databases and multiple tables. Ability to query enterprise databases using SQL queries, multilevel joins and parameter, and Crystal Reports.
Ability to collect, analyze, and present institutional data for external and internal audiences, ensuring privacy and security of institutional data.
Proficiency in survey design, implementation and analysis for large organizations.
Expertise in statistical programs, including SPSS, and in data reporting and visualization tools such as Microsoft Excel and Tableau.
Knowledge and experience with external higher education institutional reporting agencies, including IPEDS, highly desirable.
Understanding of current trends and needs in higher education in the U.S, including graduate education.
Ability to effectively communicate data findings through the use of written and oral presentations.
Ability to work independently and with a range of departments and personnel, managing and prioritizing multiple projects.
Ability to learn the program/curriculum structure at NPS.
Education / Experience:
Graduate degree in education, statistics, data analytics, social or behavioral science, information technology or other related field is strongly preferred. Bachelor’s degree may be acceptable if in combination with experience that provides the required skills and ability.
Two+ years experience in institutional research and/or in a research analyst position in higher education is desirable.
