The University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC), one of four University of Missouri campuses, serves as a doctoral research institution offering interdisciplinary programs to approximately 14,500 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The UMKC Institute for Defense and Energy Systems (IDES) mission is to address wicked challenges in defense, energy, and health by transitioning fundamental solutions to dual-use markets.
UMKC IDES is currently seeking a dedicated Senior Grant Writer. In this position, the Senior Grant Writer will utilize their seasoned technical expertise for identifying, developing, managing, writing, and reporting grant proposals, business contracts, and/or other scientific/technical documents across multiple disciplines including, but not limited to, government and military agencies, small businesses, and foundations that align with the research mission of the UMKC IDES.
Find, automate, screen solicited and unsolicited funding opportunities that align with the mission of UMKC IDES
Thoroughly review award terms, conditions, and Periods of Performance (PoP) to help determine proposal acceptance success
Identify Principal Investigators (PIs) for grants/contracts across the UMKC campus community, particularly in the areas of Arts & Sciences, Dentistry, Medicine, Pharmacy, and Engineering and provides editing and writing services to support the PIs in developing high quality and highly competitive grant proposals for submission to federal, state, non-profit, internal, and/or private funding agencies and organizations
Works closely with the IDES team, the Office of Strategic Research, Technology Transfer, and other University offices to compile and submit grant applications in a timely manner
Provides full lifecycle editing and writing support for grant submissions, including managing timelines and project milestones, collecting figures, illustrations, and information from various sources, editing documents and coordinating with multiple stakeholders involved in the submission
Maintains up-to-date opportunities list to track deadlines for reports, letters of intent, requests for information, grant submissions, and other proposal opportunities
Prepares progress reports and updates for federal, state, non-profit, and/or private funding agencies and organizations
Prepare and submit a minimum of five proposals (white papers, quad charts, technical documents, etc.) per month
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Research and Institute Programs
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience, and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Master's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Medicine (STEM). Degrees in other areas may be considered with a proven record of high quality technical writing, Doctoral degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Medicine (STEM) strongly preferred
5-7 years experience in extensive scientific/medical writing experience, including research proposal development and scientific manuscript; Department of Defense experience a plus
Demonstrated ability to write successful grant proposals
Ability to hold and maintain a United States Security Clearance
A solid understanding of budgets as they relate to proposals, contracts, and grants
Experience writing technical documentation that adheres to proposal guidelines and standards
Excellent written communication and research skills
Exceptionally organized, efficient, and motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and as part of a fast-paced, growing team
Proficiency in all areas of Microsoft Office
Full Time/Part Time
$47,476 to $65,468
