You will serve as a Medical Technologist in the Laboratory Department of NAVMEDCEN PORTSMOUTH VA. In this position you will serve as a Laboratory Information Systems Medical Technologist of the General/Core Laboratory Team. This section is responsible for conducting qualitative and quantitative analysis of various constituents in biological fluids.
Responsibilities
You will implement new standard and non-standard analytical methods and procedures.
You will interpret Quality Control (QC) data and detect shifts, trends and unacceptable results.
You will identify unexpected and/or abnormal results/conditions that cause erroneous results and take appropriate action to make corrections and solve problems.
You will calibrate, standardize, adjust and maintain equipment and instruct other laboratory personnel in these operations.
You will manage and ensures compliance with accreditation as required by Joint Commission, College of American Pathologists (CAP), and other accrediting agencies.
You will be responsible for the safe and effective operation of equipment and contributes to a safe working environment.

A Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics; AND have successfully completed a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time my degree was obtained. OR
Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study that included 12 months in a college or hospital-based medical technology program or medical technology school approved by a recognized accrediting organization. The professional medical technology curriculum may have consisted of a 1-year post- bachelor's certificate program or the last 1 or 2 years of a 4-year program of study culminating in a bachelor's in medical technology. OR
Have successfully completed a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from an accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry), one semester (one quarter) of mathematics. (Note - All science and mathematics courses must have been acceptable for credit toward meeting the requirements for a science major at an accredited college or university.) AND have five years of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, microbiology, Immunology and Urinalysis/Body Fluids. (Note - Acceptable experience is responsible professional or technician experience in a hospital laboratory, health agency, industrial medical laboratory, or pharmaceutical house; or teaching, test development, or medical research program experience that provided an understanding of the methods and techniques applied in performing professional clinical laboratory work. Certification/licensure as a medical technologist (generalist) obtained through written examination by a nationally recognized credentialing agency or State licensing body is a good indication that the quality of experience is acceptable.) OR
Are currently a federal employee assigned to a Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist 0644 series position as of July 2017.
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of clinical laboratory experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector as a professional Medical Technologist. Specialized experience should demonstrate experience conducting qualitative and quantitative analysis of various constituents in biological fluids; evaluating abnormal results; maintaining and making modifications to the laboratory computer systems; setting up and monitoring quality controls; solving complex diagnostic and technical problems; and ensures compliance with accrediting and regulatory agency requirements.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. Completion of three years of progressively higher graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or possession of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.
This position has selective placement factors that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factors are: 1) you must be certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT) or other board of registry deemed comparable by the Center for Clinical Laboratory Medicine (CCLM) as a medical technologist (MT) or medical laboratory scientist (MLS); or be a commissioned laboratory officer in the Military Services, and have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; and have at least 3 years of laboratory experience in high complexity testing and be certified by the ASCP, AMT or other board of registry deemed comparable by CCLM as an MT or MLS; AND 2) meet minimal conditions to be certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Program in accordance with 42 CFR 493.1461. 3) Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Certification.
