Alfred State College, one of the State University of New York (SUNY) system's premier colleges of technology, is seeking a Dean of the School of Applied Technology. The College, part of the 64 campus SUNY system, enrolls more than 3,500 students, a majority of whom live on the Alfred Campus. The School of Applied Technology is primarily located on the Wellsville Campus which is 24 acres with 25 buildings and a large wetlands remediation project. The campus is located among the hills, valleys, and lakes of picturesque Southwestern New York State. The Dean also oversees the college's additional location located at the Northland Workforce Development Center, which is located in Buffalo, NY and serves a non-traditional student population.
The Dean of the School of Applied Technology, who reports directly to the Provost, is responsible for leading over 60 faculty and staff. The school includes five departments (Automotive Trades, Building Trades, Computerized Design and Manufacturing, Culinary Arts, and Electrical Trades) offering 18 programs to students in the applied technologies. The School of Applied Technology is unique in that students are immersed in real work as they learn their trades, and each program integrates knowledge relevant to "green" and "sustainable" technologies into their curricula. The School of Applied Technology also maintains a strong commitment to civic engagement. The Dean:
Provides leadership in strategic planning and implementing the school's vision to provide exceptional hands on education in the trades.
Provides support for the recruitment, development and retention of the faculty and staff.
Oversees Coordinator of Extended Learning and execution of School of Applied Technology courses and programs offsite.
Leads effort to increase enrollment developing new recruitment strategies, promoting retention and developing new programs and sites in coordination and collaboration with the College's overall enrollment management plan.
Leads programmatic evaluation and revision pursuing national accreditation when applicable.
Supports building student engagement at the college in collaboration with Student Affairs.
Advocates for the school within the College, and with donors, funding agencies and alumni.
Has operational oversight of physical facilities and technological capacity of the School with a focus on expanding and improving the Wellsville campus including investing in new technologies, broadening student services and enhancing the campus.
Works in coordination with the Administrative Services unit to establish priorities, develop budgets and create a timeline for implementation.
Facilitates cost effective utilization of all School resources.
Develops strong working relationships with business, unions and industry with a strong commitment to economic development planning and the School's engagement in such activities.
Represents the school within SUNY, workforce development agencies, and other partners.
Leads the school in targeted external revenue generating activities, external fund raising, and grant writing.
Works with K-12 and BOCES partners to enhance education in the trades and expand access across the state.
Participates in President's Council as a college leader charting the future of Alfred State, and serves on Dean's Council and Academic Affairs Collaboration Team.
The successful applicant will have:
A master's degree and/or a bachelor's degree with significant experience in trades, teaching and educational leadership.
A distinguished record of teaching with service appropriate for appointment as a tenured full professor in a department within the College.
A minimum of five years of increasing responsibility and success as a leader and manager, with preference to those who have served in higher education as a department chair or above.
Demonstrated experience in both budget management and securing external funding.
A record of collaborative leadership working among different disciplines and departments.
A proven record of success in student recruitment and retention.
Demonstrated excellence in oral, written, and interpersonal communication.
A demonstrated commitment to social equity and cultural diversity.
A record of supporting faculty and staff professional development.
A demonstrated commitment to shared faculty governance.
A commitment to maintaining a culture of student-centeredness
