The Career & Academic Advisor is responsible for conducting career and academic planning programs for the SJFC student community on an individual and group basis within the Center for Career & Academic Planning. This position will also present outreach programming and workshops to students in classroom settings, residence halls, and student organizations as appropriate or as required by School-based programs. The Career & Academic Advisor serves as the primary point of student contact for integrated career and academic planning.
1.Counsel and advise students and alumni—from prospective student through graduation— individually and in groups, on issues related to planning an academic program, personal development, and identifying educational and career goals. Employ vocational assessment instruments where appropriate; assist students and alumni in the use of existing resources for learning about academic programs and careers of interest to them; assist with programs and services related to internships and employment, e.g., resume reviews, mock interviews, job search strategies. 2.Develop, coordinate, facilitate, and/or present academic planning, career development modules, special workshops, and seminars, e.g. choosing a major, resume development, identifying internship opportunities, negotiating a job offer, business etiquette. 3.Meet with prospective and admitted students and their parents/family members during appropriate campus programs, e.g., Open House, Orientation. 4.Provide information to students, alumni, and parents on specific programs, and make referrals where appropriate, for services offered either by the College or by outside organizations for the benefit of the individual. 5.Train faculty/staff advisors to recognize students’ concerns related to career and academic direction, graduate school options, and choice of major, and to make and follow up on referrals. 6.Coordinate, lead and/or participate in advising programs and courses serving specific sub-populations of students. Serve as content resource to Career Planning courses across all Schools. 7.Review and respond on a daily basis to case notes in CRM. 8.Serve as liaison and resource for academic Schools, departments, as assigned. 9.Prepare, organize, and maintain appropriate resources, reports and statistical summaries as needed. 10.Supervise and/or train student Peer Mentors as assigned. 11.Participate in professional development activities as required; serve on committees and at meetings as assigned. 12.Perform related duties as assigned.
Education / Experience:
1. Master’s degree in counseling, higher education administration, or related field required; 2. Career services/ academic advising experience preferred. 3. Understanding of career and student development theories preferred.

35 hours per week. Ability to work nontraditional work hours including evenings, holidays or weekends as needed.
