POSITION OVERVIEW We are seeking an individual with a deep understanding of investment instruments (transferable securities, indices, options, swaps) and how they can be used in portfolios with a particular focus on the UCITS regulatory framework. That individual will play an important role in helping our business to recognize issues as we take on new mandates and use new strategies as well as having a key role in making sure that we meet our responsibilities for complying with the rules on an ongoing basis. This is a new position and is a reflection of our growth and the increased complexity in our investment products and client requirements.
We will consider clients from a wide variety of backgrounds. The candidate is likely to come from a Compliance, Risk Management, Product Management or Guideline Monitoring background.
This role will be based in our London office.
RESPONSIBILITIES The Compliance Director will be responsible for providing advice to various business functions as the second line of defence within our framework for complying with our client guidelines. There will be a particular focus on the UCITS regime and the suitability of specific instruments and investment strategies pre-trade eligibility assessments. The Compliance Director will provide subject matter expertise on matters related to UCITS and other client guidelines that derive from EU, Swiss and Middle Eastern regulatory regimes from the inception of new product through to the implementation of trades by the portfolio management teams
The role is new and integral to Wellington's efforts to buildout the infrastructure around the governance of mandates for our clients.
Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
Partnering with the investment teams to provide guidance and advice on UCITS eligibility
Reviewing client Investment Management Agreements, Prospectuses, Guidelines, RFPs and the like for potential regulatory issues with the investment strategies that the team uses.
Monitoring and providing advice to the business on new opportunities and product ideas
Interacting with clients when relevant guideline compliance issues (with a regulatory angle) are raised
Providing Training to the business as appropriate
Building connections within the industry to assess marketplace and regulatory changes developments
Over time ensure compliance with new investment risk regulations that will impact clients based in the EMEA region
To be an integral part of UCITS Focus Group, and Future State initiatives in conjunction with our efforts to evolve the support of our UCITS efforts
Work closely with the Guideline Monitoring Analysts (no direct management responsibilities). The role does not include the coding or testing of trades within the Sentinel Compliance system that the firm uses for pre trade compliance but the Director will work closely with that team. Liaising with Guideline Monitoring on the ongoing compliance of portfolios and providing advice where there are potential breaches of guidelines
Working on other Compliance projects as appropriate.
The successful candidate will have significant experience ideally gained within another blue chip Investment Management firm.
The most important qualification is a deep knowledge of portfolio management techniques across asset classes and how various instruments and strategies are used to meet client requirements
Knowledge of regulations that impact WMIL's client base is also required. We would need the candidate to have a good understanding of UCITS and how it can be applied / industry best practice. We would not expect the candidate to know all relevant regimes but to build their knowledge over time
