The University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) is seeking a visionary and resourceful leader to become Director of the Free Enterprise Center (FEC). The Free Enterprise Center will be a hub of advanced product design, technology, and business innovation collocated within the School of Computing and Engineering's new, 44,000 sq. ft. free enterprise and research facility. The FEC, with its technology and business focus, will have a dual mission: supporting the UMKC community and the wider Kansas City entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The FEC will provide equipment and training for UMKC students, faculty and staff. This facility will provide capacity for selected faculty projects, while also focusing on the expansion of quality enterprises in the Kansas City region. In particular, for industry, the FEC will specialize in providing outsourced prototyping, research and development services to companies with growth potential.
The FEC supports its mission through state-of-the-art prototyping, software and 3-D visualization technology and training coupled with guidance through entrepreneurial support services. The FEC plays a unique role in University-Business partnerships by providing the best opportunities for supporting product innovation for small and mid-sized companies, while also enhancing the integration of engineering, business, product design, and technology within the University community.
Role of the Director
The Director will be responsible for the management of the FEC, including developing programs, selecting appropriate technology, building program budgets, publicizing the capacities of the FEC to the University and external communities, developing contractual relationships with businesses, and building connections to industry as required.
The Director will work with an Advisory Board and report to the Dean of the School of Computing & Engineering at UMKC. The Director will be located in or near the new School of Computing and Engineering facility. Additionally, the Director is expected to build relationships with and use the expertise within the Henry W. Bloch School of Management, the UMKC Innovation Center, local businesses, and government agencies.
The ideal candidate will be a mature leader with a proven track record of working with a variety of constituencies. This position will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic plan for the center in collaboration with others in the university and business community.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Experience in business development
Strong project management skills
Financial and budgeting acuity
Record of having built programs or businesses from the early stage of development to a more mature level
Ability to direct and oversee the development and implementation of short- and long-term strategies for the FEC
Ability to identify and solve technical and operational challenges
Ability to collaborate with community, university and corporate leadership to enhance the worth of the FEC
Ability to create policies and procedures to insure the safety of the individuals using the FEC
Ability to manage direct reports effectively
Ability to assist in or to effectively write grants for continued support of programs, new equipment, and personnel.
Bachelor's degree preferably in business or a related field and at least 6 years of operational management experience.
Prior entrepreneurial experience and knowledge of the region's business and entrepreneurial environment are highly desirable.
Master's degree, preferably in business, marketing or a related field and some administrative experience within a commercial or university based entrepreneurship center, prototyping operation or engineering design department.
Full Time/Part Time
$75,000, to be commensurate with experience/qualifications
