Please note that this is a part time 50% career position.
This position will primarily focus on research and development in the area of human circadian health in unique populations, including active duty military members and families of children with special needs. Provide leadership in research and development in the areas of sleep, circadian health and the biological effects of light in unique populations, including, but not limited to, active duty military members and families of children with special needs.
Develop a vision and plan for research and development activities in these domains, in conjunction with other UCSD and national-level researchers. Ensure that the work being done within the group remains at the state-of-the-art and is of the highest standards. Provide support to the Naval Health Research Center, Office of Naval Research, Naval Bureau of Medicine and other DoD entities. Coordinate research and outreach activities with the Center for Circadian Biology (CCB).
Oversee and provide training to students, interns and postdoctoral scholars in fundamental principles of Circadian Rhythms as well as various relevant techniques within the field. Analyze and disseminate experimental results via conference presentations, manuscripts, technical reports and other publications. Utilize expertise and emerging study findings to develop outreach and educational programming for sleep and circadian health within the local military community.
Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of circadian rhythms, psychology, or a related field as evidenced by an advanced degree in such fields, including relevant research study techniques; or an equivalent combination of education and research experience. PhD preferred.
Demonstrated experience working across multiple scientific domains – circadian rhythms, psychology, and development.
Extensive knowledge and in-depth understanding of statistical and/or other analysis techniques designed to support research projects of broad scope and complexity.
Strong demonstrated scientific publication record. Ability to communicate highly technical information with clarity and efficiency.
Demonstrated experience with the demonstration of procedures and technical supervision of hands-on science materials to young children.
Advanced ability to communicate complex information in clear and concise manner, verbally and in writing. Superior analytical and written communication skills, with ability to understand complex scientific and research concepts. Experience in expressing such content into succinct copy for research reports, correspondence, and communication for the general public.
Excellent public speaking skills; experience preparing and delivering presentations; ability to facilitate groups. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work with a diverse group of people, communicate clearly and effectively.
Demonstrated ability to address small to large audiences to present scientific/technical data to peer groups at conferences or symposiums.
Proven experience with the demonstration of procedures and technical supervision of hands-on science materials to young children.
Advanced project management skills. Ability to lead and influence within and external to project team. Experience in management of large, complex multi-site and multi-disciplinary research studies.
Advanced research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations. Extensive experience in designing and conducting experiments, collecting data, and reporting results.
Experience in documenting all experimental results, writing manuscripts and grant reports. In-depth knowledge of policies and procedures governing sponsored research.
Advanced ability to think creatively to recommend action steps or strategize solutions relative to research. Decision-making skills and ability to use independent judgment to quickly set priorities and to solve problems.
Ability to analyze situations, identify existing or potential problems, recommend solutions, determine and implement procedures to accomplish effective resolution, and evaluate results or progress. Ability to respond effectively to unexpected events and crises.
Knowledge and working experience with computers and software including: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SPSS, Matlab, Graphpad Prism, Origin and Cosinor Analysis programs.
Experience in training and providing work direction to individuals of varying skill levels.
Knowledge and experience of purchasing procedures and maintaining budgets.
