We are currently seeking an Animal Caretaker II to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, Building #33
OVERVIEW: Responsible for all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of NIAID Division of Intramural Research animals, specifically in relation to the breeding program.
Description of Duties:
Perform duties of Laboratory Animal Caretaker I and II at ABSL 1 to 3, including handling red card cases and weight requests
Perform duties and assist with training of Animal Caretaker I as needed
Restrain, handle, and manipulate various animal species
Implement and maintain breeding programs, such as setting up breeding pairs of animals as directed per technical requests and cage organization in the room
Prepare and maintain accurate and detailed records to include: cage cards, animal health records, mating logs, weaning calendar, and change logs
Perform breeder checks weekly to check status on new litters and breeder productivity. Communicate with investigators as needed to ensure the breeding colonies are producing appropriately to include animal numbers, breeders producing adequate litters, etc.
Produce a guideline book and maintain it for each strain to include special instructions/purpose of the breeders ie. produce a certain amount of weanlings for an experiment, produce weanlings to continue a line, etc.
Communicate with managers on progress of breeding colonies and any issues related to the breeding colonies
Perform prescribed treatments on animals
Assist in performing technical experimental procedures as directed at various levels of biohazard containment
Read and understand technical requirements stated in Animal Study Protocols (ASPs) and discern discrepancies between technical requests and ASPs
Understand and follow SOPs, safety procedures, and quality assurance guidelines for animal care at all levels of biohazard containment
Report any abnormal conditions of the animal facility or immediate vicinity to supervisory staff
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Experience: Must have knowledge on how to maintain a rodent breeding colony. Must be able to complete an intensive background investigation through the National Agency Check and Inquiries (ANACI) and pass a security risk assessment through the FBI and Criminal Justice Information Services Division. Must complete the required training and receive clearance on the duties of Breeder Technician as outlined.
Required Education: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) or currently eligible to obtain the ALAT and will become certified within 6 months of acquiring the position.
