Early Childhood Toddler Teacher (2 Positions Available) University of Massachusetts Boston Full-Time
Under the supervision of the Director of the Early Learning Center, the Early Childhood Toddler Teacher (2 Positions Available) will provide a nurturing, safe environment for children and facilitate the emotional, social, intellectual and physical growth of all children assigned to his/her care. The incumbent is responsible for curriculum planning, classroom management, written progress reports, and for maintaining a classroom environment which meets the accreditation standards of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Ensure compliance with group day care regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) and the policies of the UMB Early Learning Center, including the health, safety and supervision of children, classroom maintenance, record keeping and developmental assessments of children;
- Maintain an educational environment for children that conforms to the professional standards and criteria established by the UMB Early Learning Center (ELC) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC);
- Provide for the health, safety and well-being of all children assigned to his/her care; develop curriculum and activity plans from observations of children, setting goals for individual children, as well as for the group; provide age appropriate materials for all key experiences; update activities and materials on a regular basis to reflect emerging goals and objectives;
- Plan curriculum and implement activities which respond to the individual needs of the children that demonstrate best practices in the field of early education; demonstrate knowledge of anti-bias approaches to curriculum development, and reflect the sensitivity to and respect for diversity;
- Under the supervision of the Director, exercise judgment and initiative regarding the health, safety and developmental needs of children, including the referral of children from diagnostic services, individualizing the program to meet the special needs of children and reporting suspected abuse and/or neglect;
- Help children to learn to resolve conflicts in a constructive manner; use positive methods of discipline; anticipate problems and redirect children, setting realistic limits in a consistent manner; regularly observe and record children's developmental progress;
- Maintain a consistent system of home/school communication; schedule parent-teacher conferences as needed; prepare written child assessments and progress reports;
- Responsible for utilizing Universal Health Care precautions protocol to prevent exposure to and the spread of childhood diseases and/or infections from human waste or body fluids;
- Under the supervision of the Director, supervise assigned student employees as required; train and evaluate student employees; meet with student employees/interns on a regular basis, mentor student interns, keeping students informed of any changes in the classroom; involve students in classroom planning when possible and ask for feedback on changes to be made in the classroom and/or curriculum;
- Participate in a minimum of 20 hours/year of professional development activities, with a minimum of one-third of training activities focused on working with children with diverse learners;
- May rotate to other classrooms as needed;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements: Associate degree in Early Childhood, Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood is preferred, and a minimum of three-five (3-5) years of full-time experience, or its' part-time equivalent, working in a licensed early childhood program required.
Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) Teacher certification is required, Lead Teacher certification preferred. Familiarity with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation criteria and a willingness to learn Teaching Strategies Gold Curriculum is preferred. Current certification in infant/child CPR and Massachusetts Child First Aid or equivalent is preferred. Incumbent must present evidence of a physical examination within one year prior to employment, as well as evidence of immunity to measles, mumps and rubella.
The following certifications and evaluations are required:
- Evidence of a completed Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, which demonstrates a background free of conduct which, in the judgment of the Massachusetts Department of Early Education, bears adversely on the ability to provide for the safety and well-being of a child;
- Evidence of a completed Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF), central Registry and Registry of Alleged Perpetrators, and a Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) check, which demonstrates a background free of conduct which, in the judgment of DCF, bears adversely on the ability to provide for the safety and well-being of a child;
- After the review and approval of the above checks, a fingerprint-based check of the state and federal criminal history database must then be completed;
- Ability to understand, explain and apply the rules, regulations, and policies governing all center-based activities;
- Ability to effectively interact and relate to children in a developmentally appropriate manner;
- Ability to be sensitive to individual children's differences and needs and willing to adjust the program and curriculum to meet those individual needs;
- Ability and willingness to continually increase knowledge in the field of early childhood education, which includes the Massachusetts Early Learning Guidelines for Infants and Toddlers and/or the Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences;
- Ability to lift children weighing up to forty (40) pounds;
- Ability to sit on the floor, bend at the waist, kneel and/or stoop at a minimum of 75% of the time;
- Ability to relate with and speak with parents in a respectful and courteous manner;
- Ability to work in a team environment;
- Ability to establish harmonious working relationships and deal tactfully with others;
- Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information;
- Motivated to learn and grow in an educational environment;
- Strong oral and written communication skills;
- Strong commitment to customer service.
