ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN AIRCRAFT DEVELOPMENT - The Aerospace Engineering Department, within the College of Engineering at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA invites applications for a full-time, academic year, tenuretrack faculty appointment within the area of Aircraft Development at a rank and salary commensurate with the applicant's background and experience. The projected start date is September 7, 2017.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: (a) teaching Aerospace Engineering courses, including the Aircraft Design sequence; building a research program in an area of advanced technology for modern aircraft. The Aircraft Design sequence at Cal Poly is a year-long design experience for all seniors selecting the aeronautics specialization. The course is typically taught with a conventional aircraft section and a dedicated Unmanned Aircraft System section. The design sequence benefits from significant industry interest and support, including 5-6 design review field trips to industry and government facilities ; (b) supervising undergraduate and graduate-level research; (c) developing and maintaining externally-funded research programs; (d) engaging in activities related to service at all levels of the University. Outcomes assessment and Learn by Doing are important components of the University curriculum. Specific assignments will depend on department and program needs. Candidates with private industry or research experience are encouraged to apply. Candidates with experience in all areas of aircraft technology are encouraged to apply; including areas such as Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC), morphing airframes, vehicle health monitoring, or other areas, are of interest.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Academic Preparation: An earned doctorate (Ph.D.)in Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent is required for appointment. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) will be considered, but must provide proof that the doctorate was completed prior to the start of appointment.
Professional Qualifications: The department seeks candidates who have an interdisciplinary mindset and who work well in a highly collaborative environment. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusivity; have a strong commitment to teaching excellence and laboratory-based instruction; and exhibit potential for professional recognition via research and publication. Demonstrated ability in written and oral use of the English language is required.
Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated excellence in university level teaching and research (commensurate with time since degree), experience with laboratory-based instruction, industrial experience, and willingness to teach in multiple areas of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. The candidate is expected to be driven with a passion for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as be engaged in scholarship. Preference will also be given to candidates with experience in the research, practice, and teaching of Aircraft Development. Experience with civil or military aircraft development programs is desired.
