The Director of International Affairs at UMKC will provide leadership in articulating and implementing the University’s vision for globalization and internationalization and will grow, strengthen, and maintain the campus’s international initiatives. This will involve coordinating international memorandums of understanding and memorandums of articulation with governments and top-tier institutions of higher education; coordinating services to attract and support international students and faculty; supporting the international involvement of schools, faculty and students; and supporting the creation of innovative programs.
The position reports to the Vice-Provost for International Affairs (VPIA) who leads the development of UMKC’s expanding international agenda in teaching, research, service, and globalization. The Director works closely with various committees and task forces, key central administrators and the Deans.
The Director provides assistance to UMKC's leadership through planning, coordinating and administering the University's international activities and programs. This position oversees the campus International Student Affairs Office (ISAO) and International Academic Programs (IAP). Specifically, the Director:
Leads the teams in and manages the finances in International Student Affairs and International Academic Programs;
Liaises with the Applied Language Institute (ALI), Student Affairs and Enrollment Management (SAEM), Strategic Marketing and Communication (MCom) and the Academic Units to increase international recruitment and retention;
Leads the teams in recruiting international students, orienting new students to the United States and UMKC, and retaining students by creating and sponsoring student activities;
Provides immigration advising so that current students as well as the university remain in compliance with federal and state regulations
Tracks students through Optional Practical Training (OPT) as required by federal regulations even after students graduate from UMKC.
Acts with the VPIA as liaisons with corporate, federal, state and global partners as well as regional, national and global professional societies related to global and international initiatives;
Collaborates with the VPIA to define the UMKC global and internationalization strategic vision and a plan for implementation;
Works with the VPIA and the Office of Alumni and Constituent Relations (ACR) to promote development initiatives and opportunities for UMKC relative to its international partners and alumni;
Provides leadership and relationship building to enhance international opportunities for faculty, students and staff for study abroad, research, internships, partnerships, and exchanges.
Oversees, creates, maintains a database and regularly reviews UMKC’s international agreements with UMKC’s international partners,
Oversees and promotes the international student organizations and their inclusion into UMKC’s ethos;
Works with the campus to make UMKC an inviting environment for international students to increase UMKC’s diversity and cross-cultural exchange between students, faculty and staff;
Serves as liaison, at the behest of the VPIA, in matters pertaining to the University of Missouri South Africa Exchange Program Committee (UMSAEP);
Coordinates and assists campus visits of international partners and other international visitors for the university and its schools and colleges;
Represents UMKC in local, regional, national and global associations such as the IRC, NAFSA, MAUI and others as approved by the VPIA;
Acts as the liaison with Risk Management for Strategic Global Risk Management for students, faculty and staff.

A master's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 7 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Earned terminal degree preferred
At least five years progressive managerial experience in higher education or significant involvement in international programming;
Ability to address conflicting demands to prioritize, and to make data-based decisions;
Ability to provide a foundation for successful, high-integrity relationships;
Member of external professional societies that support international educational initiatives;
Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with faculty and staff in building support for program development;
Demonstrated cross-cultural sensitivity, history of working with multi-cultural populations; and
Demonstrated team leadership and the ability to facilitate a collaborative work environment.
