The development team of three full-time employees identifies, develops, and stewards relationships and fundraising activities with individuals, corporations, foundations, government and other funding institutions. The team works with the Board of Directors, Associate Board, President, COO, Director of Volunteer Engagement, Director of Communications and Marketing, and Program Directors to create, lead, implement, and evaluate successful development strategies.
The Senior Director of Development will both lead and manage the team as well as drive her/his own revenue results. The Senior Director of Development will be working in a highly collaborative work environment. Reporting directly to the President & CEO, the Director will be a member of the senior leadership team of CEP. The Director should be committed to the goals of the organization and be able to articulate those goals and CEP’s mission with passion and commitment.
Management (20% of the position)
Participate in strategic planning. Work with senior staff and the board to translate the vision and strategic plan into achievable steps. Actively promote the mission, vision, and values statements and ensure assigned staff incorporate these beliefs and values into their daily work ethic.
Serve as an articulate, passionate, and visible spokesperson for CEP and as a prominent leader throughout the organization, among stakeholders, and in the Chicago community.
Hire, train, mentor and supervise assigned staff; including recruitment and selection; scheduling and job assignment, counseling/ coaching; staff development and training; performance evaluation; and recommending salary, disciplinary and other personnel actions in accord with CEP procedures.
Provide professional development opportunities and guidance to each team member to strengthen their skill sets and job satisfaction; meet regularly with the team to identify priorities, discuss strategies, and review ongoing projects.
Develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to include major gifts, special campaigns, special events, individual giving, sponsorship opportunities, and corporate, foundation, and government grants. Lead the team in the development of a written and benchmark-driven annual work plan. Track progress towards goals and make mid-course adjustments as necessary.
Follow major trends or changes in philanthropy and position CEP to respond to such trends.
Working with the senior staff team, monitor the financial health of the organization. Establish and oversee the department expense budget and income goals. Prepare financial documents needed for fundraising and evaluation. Communicate regularly to Board and staff the status of fundraising projects; prepare regular revenue forecasts, track results against goals.
Provide staff support to the Board Fundraising Committee.
Keep abreast of programmatic needs and new program developments by attending program meetings and communicating regularly with Program Directors.
Major Gifts (45% of the position)
Major Gifts-Individual Relationships
Oversee a proactive moves management system for monitoring the prospecting, stewarding, soliciting, and reporting of major individual donors.
Prepare and schedule President & CEO and Board members for major donor stewardship, cultivation activities, and solicitations.
Manage a portfolio of individual major donors and projects. Build relationships with major donors through meetings, follow-up activities, identification of interests, solicitation and the preparation of letters, proposals and reports to major donors.
Major Gifts-Corporate Relationships
Research current corporate donors and sponsors, analyze their giving patterns and histories, and develop plans for strengthening relationships and increasing their support.
Targeting local financial institutions, develop a clear case for support as part of individual bank's Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) strategy. Develop prospect list, cultivate relationships, and solicit new partners/supporters.
Working collaboratively with program and external-facing staff, develop new opportunities for corporate partners and sponsors to support Progress-on-the-Go (CEP’s mobile financial center), individual community sites, specific programs and/or suite of services Develop the prospect list, cultivate and solicit new corporate supporters.
Work closely with CEP leadership to actively engage with Board members and volunteers who may have access and contacts within corporations and financial institutions.
Coordinate site visits a participating as needed. Ensure CEP staff are adequately prepared for donor engagement activities.
Collect, maintain, and analyze evaluative and anecdotal data from internal and external sources, evaluators, peers and, policymakers, to assist with corporate solicitations.
Keep current on national and local sponsorship, marketing and corporate giving trends.
Individual Giving/Annual Fund (20%)
Build year-round individual giving campaign, reaching current and new donors, through moves management system. Evaluate, recommend, and implement strategies for increasing income from annual donors. Supervise Development Coordinator’s activities.
Create a working relationship with all board members to actively engage them in fundraising. Train and support board, staff, and volunteers to be effective fundraisers.
Create a working relationship with Associate Board members to actively engage them in fundraising and monitor Development Coordinator’s role in supporting the associate board.
Establish ongoing process to screen potential prospects in CEP’s database, including volunteers.
Develop and oversee a plan for the stewardship and annual solicitation of the Associate Board and for the volunteer base. Evaluate, recommend and implement strategies for increasing income from members. Supervise and support the Development Coordinator in this work.
Development Calendar (5%)
Monitor and oversee the overall fundraising calendar to ensure timely submission of foundation, corporate, and government grant proposals and reports, as well as individual requests, and to ensure grant and contract compliance. Supervise and support the Director of Institutional Giving and Development Coordinator in this work and work closely with other senior staff to ensure timely reporting and sharing of data.
Develop and execute roster of submissions and requests utilizing a long-term relationship management approach that engages staff across the organization.
Special Events (5%)
Develop innovative ways to expand net proceeds from events.
Produce the annual Counting on Progress fundraising event. Oversee the planning calendar, venue, budget, and evaluation for the event.
Serve as lead staff and coordinate any smaller, major donor events (house party, cocktail party, etc.). Monitor budget, evaluate results.
Attend and actively participate in required educational programs and departmental and staff meetings.
Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; and participating in professional organizations.
Protect organization's value and manage risk by keeping information confidential.
Ensuring accurate record-keeping of contributions and timeliness of donor acknowledgments.
Ensure that CEP’s messaging to donors, funders, and prospects is consistent across all channels; ensure that CEP’s case for support is updated.
Serve as the final authority in approving all donor materials and publications.
Perform other duties as assigned.
An advanced degree is preferred.
Demonstrated pursuit of continuing education in the philanthropic sector, a CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Professional) is preferred.
12 years fundraising experience required with a minimum of four years in a senior management position leading a development team and managing and monitoring fundraising goals.
Solid knowledge of, and experience with corporate, individual, and sponsorship giving.
Verifiable track record of successfully soliciting and closing major gifts ($5,000 and above) from individuals.
Proven ability to lead a fundraising effort that brings in $2-3 million annually (in addition to other factors, performance is evaluated based on the ability to reach fundraising goals).
Experience and proven success developing board and volunteers as fundraisers.
Special Knowledge & Skills
Experienced with Microsoft Office. Proficiency with fundraising software required (Salesforce an asset).
Knowledge of the local and national funding community; particularly individual philanthropists and the Chicago corporate community. ? Excellent managerial skills, experience working cross-departmentally, and building a sense of team.
Outgoing personality with an infectious can-do attitude. ? Excellent verbal communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
This position operates primarily in a professional office environment that is accessible. Some work at off-site locations may be required and those may not necessarily be fully accessible

This is a full-time position at 37.5 hours per week. Days of work are Monday through Friday, hours flexible
Evening and weekend work occasionally will be required
