The NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provide services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department of Agriculture employs approximately 2000 employees.
This position is responsible for complete gross post-mortem examinations on a variety of animal species. Other duties include sample procurement and distribution to appropriate laboratory sections for ancillary diagnostic testing necessary to obtain a diagnosis. Release and distribution of serology, virology and microbiology results. This position is also responsible for the supervision of the daily operations of the Hoyle C. Griffin Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in the absence of the Director. On call weekend and holiday work expected.
Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of veterinary medicine. Knowledge of North Carolina regulations pertaining to livestock and poultry. Ability to read, comprehend and apply various Federal and State regulations pertaining to livestock and poultry. Ability to manage and supervise personnel. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
Preferences: Previous laboratory and supervisory experience; previous large animal experience.

The NCVDLS is an AAVLD-accredited participant in the USDA's National Animal Health Laboratory Network. The laboratory system is comprised of one central laboratory located in Raleigh, and three branch laboratories at Elkin, Monroe, and Fletcher. The NCVDLS provides a broad range of diagnostic services to support animal agriculture in the State (livestock and poultry industries), as well as, providing services to veterinary practitioners and animal owners.
