Based either at UHG corporate headquarters in Minnetonka, MN; or at UHG's External Affairs office in Washington, DC, the director will report to the VP, External Affairs Communications (who is based in DC); and work closely with a broad range of internal clients, including but not limited to: the Director of the Center for Health Reform & Modernization; the Director of the United Health Foundation; and leaders in the Government Affairs group. The Director also will work with partners throughout the Enterprise and with external partners on key public initiatives, such as America's Health Rankings and grant announcements.Primary Responsibilities:Driving positive communications for UHG in a complex and competitive health care environment. This includes partnering closely with External Affairs and relevant business units and creating and implementing communications strategies to convey company positioning and initiatives Developing plans and creating opportunities to communicate with and build relationships with key Washington, D.C. and national health care, regulatory, policy, and Congressional reporters, bloggers, and editorial staff Using strong verbal communications skills to position and respond in a timely manner to UHG-related media inquiries and skillfully pitch initiatives, products, and other corporate news to media. This includes writing testimonies, press releases, Q&As, backgrounders, key messages, and talking pointsIdentifying and preparing spokespeople while also serving as a spokesperson and liaison with the media and public policy entities Working with Communications' Social Media Team to leverage the growing number and types of media outlets, including web-based communications, to further External Affairs objectives Participating actively in the Corporate Communications department meetings Coordinating with External Affairs on key upcoming Enterprise events and announcements Quickly learning and staying up-to-date on internal dynamics, positions, and messaging, and the relevant external environment. This includes having the ability to understand complex issues and be able to describe them for audiences with varying levels of subject matter expertise
Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree 8 or more years of experience, working with at least one of the following functional business areas: Communications, Public Relations, Public Affairs, Government Affairs, and/or Issues Management Experience as an effective press secretary or communications director working in a fast-paced environment, coupled with an extensive network of contacts and a track record of success regarding advancing an agenda in both proactive and reactive manners Experience effectively communicating directly with senior members of an organizationPreferred Qualifications:Experience working in a highly-matrixed, large corporate organizationKnowledge of health care issues, including health care reform, public programs like Medicare and Medicaid, health information technology, population health management Soft Skills:Excellent written and oral communications and proven analytical and organizational skills A highly motivated team player with the ability to multi-task and excellent time management skills Careers with UnitedHealthcare.
