Position Summary: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Sr Research Scientist.
In this role, the successful candidate NYU Langone School of Medicine is seeking a cryo-EM Senior Research Scientist who will oversee the operation of our state-of-the-art cryo-EM core. The core will include Titan Krios and Talos Arctica microscopes, both with direct detectors, for single particle EM and cryo electron tomography. The Senior Research Scientist will report to the Director of the core, Dr. David Stokes. The Senior Research Scientist will be responsible for oversight and maintenance of these microscopes, for assisting users, who will be primarily from the NYU research community, and for developing and implementing a training program targeted at attracting novice users to the core. The Senior Research Scientist will also supervise technical staff associated with the core and will interface with our High Performance Computing (HPC) team to ensure a seamless interface between data collection and data processing. The director will be expected to keep up with latest developments by interacting with other cryo EM facilities in the New York area and by attending key EM conferences, such as the EM Gordon Conference. Such activities will ensure integration of NYU with the greater EM community as well as implementation of cutting-edge techniques and technologies into our facility.
Oversee day-to-day operations of the cryo-EM core Maintain Talos Arctica and Krios microscopes. This duty requires interfacing with FEI engineers to ensure optimal performance of the microscopes. Implement data collection strategies that will benefit our user community Maintain ancillary, cryo-EM related equipment such as Vitrobot, glow discharger etc. Load samples and align microscopes prior to data collection Maintain accurate logs for microscope performance, usage and service
Interface with broad user community in support of their projects: Implement training programs for various relevant activities; Participate in educational programs such as workshops and labs for grad students; Assist users in data collection; Evaluate quality of samples produced by users and advise on protocols for specimen preparation; Evaluate quality of images obtained by users and advise on appropriate data collection strategies
Supervise technician with day-to-day operations of the cryo-EM core
Interface and collaborate with Microscopy Core for preliminary screening of samples
Interface and collaborate with High Performance Computing team to ensure adequate computational resources for data collection, storage and processing
Maintain high level of professional expertise through familiarity with scientific literature and scientific networking
Prepare reports and responds to departmental needs: Reviews monthly P&L report and adjusts accordingly with OSR Administration Reports problems and their resolution to the core Director Prepares all reports and responds to departmental needs on or before due date
Develop and maintains a high level of customer service. Monitoring and continually seeking to improve the performance of the core Displays courtesy, tact, and diplomacy when dealing with staff, colleagues, superiors, patients, hospital visitors, vendors, representatives of other institutions and government and regulatory agencies Offers to assist staff, colleagues, vendors, representatives of other institutions and government and regulatory agencies in attaining their goals or completing their tasks whenever possible, or if unable, obtains appropriate assistance
Minimum Qualifications: To qualify you must have a Requirements: PhD in structural biology, biochemistry or related field At least 4 years of cryo-EM experience, with expertise in handling samples, using microscopes, evaluating images and producing 3D structures Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Knowledge of the principles of transmission electron microscopy General understanding of single particle cryo-EM workflow; experience in cryo electron tomography is a plus Special consideration will be given to candidates with management experience or a record of achievement in collaborative, team-driven environments
